So thought if we all stated our engine size, fuel type, and maximum range acheived from a tank that may show that though some seem to have higher mpg actually their ranges are very similar.

So lets have it guys over the coming week or 2 as you can.

1st post, go easy on me! Great forum, answered a lot of issues for me.

Got a XC90 D5 AWD 2003 Auto 126k miles

Does about 400 miles to the tank, computer says 31 mpg average.

Manual calculations indicate about 29 mpg but i think thats ok.

230 miles to half tank- for motorway trip was mostly around 80 mph but some major loss of efficiency around Northampton (A43)-millions of roundabouts along with A34-up hills with constant lorry overtaking-probably good for 500 miles if long straight route?

I must have a heavy foot, or my fuel gauge is wrong, nearly all my driving is round town, but even on a long run 400 was pushing it,but the computer mpg was average 38.

When you're all taking the computer figures do you reset at the start of a journey? I've always left mine to run to give me a total average since I got the vehicle.

Actually that makes me think of another question, does the fuel computer take a total average or is it based upon the last so many miles? I ask because both me previous cars settled on an average figure which hardly changed yet the XC90's can be influenced on a single journey. Done 26K miles.

Thanks

Oh and I get around 400-420 miles per tank with typically half town driving in a 09 D5 auto.

The average reading has to be fairly instantaneous as mine for one sat at an over all average of 31 creeps up and down fairly quickly from motorway to rural.
I also like you think reseting regular gives you an overall false reading. As you could do it on the motorway see your average climb to 40 when actually YOUR normal average is as you know 31 etc. So for me best left as is.

I reset mine at the start of a week before setting off. That way I get an accurate reading for the week. I cover (on average) over 1000 miles a week of mixed driving.
