Talking Off to see a shed

I was out looking at an XC90 yesterday and it was great. Drove well, sounded sweet. Bit dull really.

Then I noticed the thing in the back of the garage. A saville grey 56 reg (185). On close inspection it has scratches, stone chips and the inside is filthy. Owned by a vicar's wife apparently. Has possible steering rack issues and maybe DPF sensor. Dealer planning to send it to auction.

But I fancy a fixer-upper. A car that I can make mine.

Going to drive it this afternoon. What would you check as the highest priorities and what would you expect to pay?

My gut feeling is that the steering is either the PAS pump or the fluid.

I have an OBD2 checker in my pocket so I'll clear all the codes before I go out in it.

A vicars wife who drove like a demon and the morals of an alley cat? Any footprints on the ceiling?

I think 56 was before Volvo improved the flange issue to the RWD - ?
Without jacking it up and spinning the prop, on a test drive mebbe try clogging away from a standing start on any loose surface you can find, and see if you get lots of front wheel spin. { usually not too expensive to fix }

Depending on mileage, look for a sticker / or service history to see if aux. belts and cam belt has been changed. A car that age is prob. in "change" territory, and if it has not been well cared for, a tempting thing ( ie expensive) to have skimped on. { potential car write-off if it lets go on you }

NB ! Lift off plastic sound deadening panel on engine that covers the injectors etc (a short tug upwards) to check that the little plastic arm on l/h side - near block/head interface is still attached. Links the electric actuator to a rod inside the head that operates emission reducing valve. With wear it can "pop" off. { either dirt cheap but fiddly to fix, or mega mega £ }

Pulls and brakes straight ? - else worn suspension arms / bushes { easy but ££ to fix }

Various noise on acceleration / braking ? - engine mounts { easy but £ to fix }

Corroded brake disks

Sticky handle on rear tail gate ? - rusty "pin" on handle (visible if lift hatch and look up into handle recess { dirt cheap & only a little fiddly to fix }

I could go on.....

PS I do love my 07 185....

Thanks everyone for the 'helpful' replies.

I think I will get belts changed, water pump checked, alternator clutch checked as a matter of course. Swirl flaps I will check today.

Off to see her in 20 mins!
