1999 V70R Aircon issues
Hi all,
Now a proud owner of a V70R. Air con regarded before I collected car, working fine. Drove it home on Friday, air con gave up on way. Just had it vacated, tested ok, oil/die and regarded. Working lovely. Driving home got to a roundabout, enthusiastically pulled out and immediately the air con quit on me, failing to work again. Any pointers? No visible leaks under bonnet using UV light. Not sure if system still contains gas. It still did have gas in it today but not sure how much. Any advice greatly appreciated, I am in Woking, Surrey is anyone knows any good places for a/c repairs with good reputation. Cheers. Hugh.

Update time, temp has dropped now, and thought I would try A/C, its working again, I assume there is a temp sensor that cuts out the A/C when under bonnet or engine temp rises too high, I guess this may be faulty, any suggestions on my thoughts?
Cheers

I'd suggest the clearance on the electromagnetic clutch on the compressor pulley may be excessive. The usual symptoms are that the air-con works fine at first then after a short while, the clutch won't pull in so no cooling. Once it cools down, it works perfectly again; for a short while.
The usual cure is to remove a shim from the clutch reducing the clearance. There is a much fuller explanation elsewhere on this forum. Martin |

Hi Martin,
Brilliant I will look into that. Hugh

What a shame - I was in Horsell on Saturday / Sun morn - missed the opportunity to lend a hand ! The aircon on my 98 R ( which you missed the opportunity to admire ) does not turn on at all - one of those topics I hand over to those with the knowledge and the kit to repair |

This is lifted from one of my posts from about a year ago. It may be of some help.
"A classic symptom of too great a clutch clearance with the V70 is that the aircon will work perfectly for the first few minutes and then simply stop. When everything has cooled down again. it all starts working again; for a few minutes. What's happening is that as the clutch coil warms up, it's resistance increases; the resistance of most metals increases as the temperature rises. As the resistance increases, the current through the coil reduces and with it the magnetic field it can produce. Eventually it cannot produce enough magnetism when hot to pull in the clutch and the aircon stops working. Needless to say the problem is worse in hot weather. Fortunately the clutch on these compressors is adjustable. It's a long time since I've done it and my memory is a bit hazy as to the detail. Basically there is a nut on the end of the compressor shaft that retains the outer clutch plate. You can undo the nut and there are three M6 threaded holes in the clutch plate that can be used with a suitable puller to pull off the clutch plate. There are some shims on the shaft and it's simply a matter or removing enough shims to restore the clutch plate clearance to normal and then putting it all back together again. Access can be a bit tight but it is doable. I'm sure you'll find a much better description than this elsewhere in the forum." There's Youtube videos on this. Did mine with three cable-ties and child labour (call Social Services immediately). After fighting it for an hour, my 12YO boy's small hands had it down in 20 mins

Did a reshim on one of these yesterday, gap was over 1 mm, pump was off the car so a lot easier.
Made a puller from an old brake pad, instructions are on here somewhere. There are 3 shims inside, two fat one thin, ended up just needing the thin one. Gap now within spec 0.3-0.4mm Last edited by snarkosnarko; Jul 10th, 2018 at 10:42. Reason: sorry pictures not uploading |

Yes, that's the proper and thorough way to do the job, but means removal from the car and a re-gas. Money and time no object, that is how I should have done it.
I'm off to set a fire in the corral and cook my beans.

Thanks everyone for taking the time out to reply, I assume its easy measure the gap? Between the pulley and the end plate?
