S40 gearbox - 2011 D2

Hopefully someone will be able to help me out - I've been having an issue with 3rd gear in my d2 S40 (I believe this has the B6 gearbox that is also used in a Ford Focus.) Unless the gear change is timed perfectly there is a crunch when changing from 2nd to 3rd or when downshifting into 3rd.

I have had the car with a mechanic who was going to try to replace the 3rd gear and 3rd gear synchro. When he contacted Volvo however to try and source the parts, he was told that Volvo don't sell parts for this gearbox...they just sell entire gearboxes.

He has told me he got part numbers from Volvo and then tried to get the parts from Ford as in theory they should be the same. The problem he then had was the Ford dealer couldn't match the part numbers up as they were Volvo numbers. He didn't want to risk taking the gearbox apart to find that the parts were not the same.

I am admittedly a bit of a novice with this, but if it's essentially the same box, should the part numbers not be the same regardless of the part coming? Would a 3rd gear and 3rd gear synchro from Ford be suitable for my gearbox?

I am going to try a gearbox specialist to see if there is anything they can do, but thought someone here might have a bit of experience with this.

cheaper and easier to get a used gearbox , syncro problems are extremely rare ..
