Default Remote Batteries Low message

When entering the car a message comes up on the console REMOTE BATTERIES LOW (or similar).

I'm guessing this is the key fob battery? how does the car know?

I was only thinking the other day that the 15 year old fob batteries are still doing well

Yeah it is the fob, presume it bases it off the signal strength it recevies, I often get it if I've unlocked it from a large distance or from inside the house before I go outside.

the fob sends the internal battery voltage to the car every time it is used .

Thank you, very clever devices eh?

I'd better replace the battery asap, the internet suggests a CR2032.

Yep CR2032 does it, I had the same warning last year. Plumped for Duracell.
