I know this sounds obvious, but are you sure the fan belt is tight enough!

It was definitely the alternator - now replaced and working fine.

Fingers crossed that's the last issue to surface and my European road trip will be smooth.

Looking at rebuilding or at least servicing the Stromberg 175 CD2 (SE?) as the car is running lean at idle (part solved by disabling the temperature compensator) and has a small drip from the float bowl gasket. Plus I enjoy working on carbs so any excuse. For this purpose a have a cheap spare carb that is almost exactly the same but has a brass plug with a groove in the bottom that screws into the jet assembly housing whereas the one fit to the vehicle is a plastic plug.

Neither carbs appear to have adjustable jet heights and neither have adjustable needles either (I've tried with the special allen key tool for these carbs). The needle currently in the vehicle is stamped B1C or perhaps B1S and the spare B1CC. The latter appears to be standard as it is listed on various Volvo suppliers sites for the 140 but I can't find reference to B1C and the B1S is for the P1800. I suspect a previous owner changed the needle when other modifications were made, but it doesn't seem to be quite right at the moment. Perhaps somebody on this forum has a Stromberg needle chart/booklet?

Indeed! Unfortunately any charts that would tell me the needle profiles so I know which is richer require buying a booklet!

I unexpectedly find myself without winter storage now so have put the car up on the usual sites at a price that reflects what I paid Dean + the cash I've put into it. One might think that this the price a little steep but honestly I'd be happy enough to just keep using it and clean it outside, underneath and inside every weekend through the winter.

That said if any Volvo club membrs want it I'd go below my "public" asking price.

Incidentally it's been running really even better since the temperature dropped - perhaps the needle and jet choice suit the Swedish climate better! Happy motoring.

Sorry to hear you are selling The old girl. The improvements you have done should now make the car a very usable and reliable car. I am sure someone will come along eventually as these are just so rare in this condition. All the best. Dean.

How much are you looking for and any pics? What work have you done and what work still needs doing? What's the bodywork like?

I just got around to doing the engine mounts this afternoon - horrendous vibration with the new ones - I may switch them back!
