Yes, I'll reiterate what the others have said in that cam belt change interval is important with this engine. When the belt goes it not only takes out the valves but often also breaks the camshaft.

Don't worry about asking, there are plenty of us D24 fans on here who will only be too glad to help as well as the usual 900 series contributors.

Default Mpg

The most I've got from a long trip 3 years ago was 50.01 mpg....usually its 38 mpg.

Lots of support on here for the D24T, they are a great engine once set up correctly.

Ohhh...and congratulations on new purchase.

Bro just got it transported home lastnight and gave it a quick wash. It's not starting at the moment but hopefully a bit of tinkering over the weekend will sort that!

I'll get him to sign up and start a proper build thread

Looks a nice wee beastie - one of my favourite Volvo colours too, Blue-Green Metallic unless i'm mistaken.

What year is it and is the non-starting because it's not turning over or because it won't turn over

hi non starting if there is good battery power. these engines fire up first turn of key every time ! so lets check glow plugs front 4 quite easy using bulb tester with crocodile cabled . carefully remove buzz bar try not to drop/loose small buzz bar nuts ! attach crocodile clip to live on battery then carefully put bulb tester probe on end of glow plug . if bulb tester bulb comes on glow plug is working
repeat working through from front glow plug glow plugs 5 and 6 are bit tricky to access but take your time . if one glow plug is down i replaced all 6 as its a fresh start .
there are other tests to carry out i.e glow plug relay but start with more simple tests . if you are in any doubt of the last time CAM BELT . TENSIONER. IDLER PULLY. AND WATER PUMP were changed these must be done . then you can forget about them for 60000 miles .only my opinion .
keep us informed on your progress . my email is jimliddy1@gmail.com should you woud like to contact me . if i can help .

Along the lines of what Jim just said, you are waiting for the glow plug light to go out before trying to start it? It's more of an "old skool" engine than what's in the XC cars so needs the full length of the glow plug cycle, especially if it's not been run for a while.

I replied as above earlier. I have now updated my consumption spreadsheet. In 2005 when I bought the car, the average mpg was around 34.6mpg. This year (2019) the consumption has been around 37.1 mpg. I don't know the reason for the slow improvement in fuel economy over the years.

I fitted a least-squares straight line to the consumption data (mpg vs. filling number). The standard deviation of the difference between the actual consumption and the straight line was 3.25 mpg, averaged over all the fillings made during my ownership.

Just looked at my spreadsheet... ( )

This year my 740 has averaged 46mpg over approx 5000 miles. When I first got it it was averaging only 43mpg...

Default Diesel mpg

2 days ago I completed a 780 km from Lakes Volvo "Wyboston, Beds" to the west coast of Ireland in my newly purchased 740 TD and it averaged 49.23 mpg.
