Thought i'd quickly post an update, as i don't believe my previous posts have given this remap justice about the MPG.

Since October when i had the MTE remap done, most of my driving in the XC90 is town/local A/B road driving. Normally 400-500 miles per month max. The longest run i do is 30 miles round trip 2-3 times a week, then everything else is stop/start traffic work. During that driving i never noticed an improvement in the MPG, and when pushed hard it dropped as low as 22mpg. I had always used Sainsburys diesel. Normally it is around 24 mpg.

Now the change...the last 3 times i've filled up i've used Shell Optimax Diesel.

This combined with a 242 mile solid round motorway trip at 3rd lane motorway speed at the weekend saw my MPG come in at 33.45mpg (32.9 litres for 242 miles). I've never seen this return before. Even when i went to France before the remap twice and did 600 miles each way i only ever got 29 mpg.

I honestly do not know whether this improvement was down to the Optimax, the remap or both combined. All i would say is that pre remap and pre Optimax i only got 29 on a long run. Even 2 months back when i did a 200 mile round trip i never noticed a difference. Usual day to day driving was only 24. Only time will tell on the next refill whether this is the same on my mixed usual driving again.

I will report back in a few weeks time to say how it continues with the Optimax.

I have been thinking about a remap but the ones recommended on here are expensive.

I used to have a mk4 mondeo prior to an xc90 and had a remap done by APR remaps in yorkshire, it improved my mpg, performance and wasnt harsh on the engine just seemed to free it up.

what is the difference between paying £400 and £180 ?? I know a mondeo is in a different league to an xc90..

£400-£500 ones are generally custom jobs where the software is written for the car, and has the latest settings that are already in the ECU incorporated within the remap so you don't lose software updates when the remap is done.

i believe £200 ones are generally "off the shelf, i size fits all" for a particular model of car.

The apr remap i had done for my vehicle (the mondeo) he sent me a box where i downloaded the ecu map to it then emailed it and he sent me a reworked map.
im assuming that is a custom map then...but it was less than 200.

The short answer is that the sub £200 maps are usually bought in (or pinched!) from a bulk supplier, whereas the £300-400 maps will be custom-written for the car by a specialist. Whether or not that difference is worth paying for is debatable, but I would suggest that since accurate mapping is absolutely critical to engine lifespan, a couple of tanks of fuel is cheap for some peace of mind.

Just to muddy the water, some "specialist" maps have later proven to be no better than the cheap ones.

cheers

James

Hello mate,

very interesting to see the fuel economy improving. Since buying my D5 Sport, I have managed 30mpg on the readout. Daily commute is B Roads to work with the odd overtake. As I mentioned before, I am going to get my car remapped by MTE, when I can sort out my damn insurance!!!! As an aside, I ran some BG 244 Diesel Fuel cleaner in it and my mpg is registering as 30.2. Miniscule you may add, but if the higher octane and fuel cleaners are making your engine run more efficient with a Good remap, then the extra mpg sounds likely. As an Design engineer in the automotive Industry, it all rings true. I wouldn't mind trying the Shell Optimax myself if it helps the engine. Just got to find a garage!

Keep up the reports mate, I am interested to see how you get on!

Cheers

all good thanks. touch wood, no problems with either damage or wear other than normal. MPG still as above. I still get a buzz of the torque coming in at around 2000rpm so try to keep the engine in that spot.

Hi Stu,

Just joined the forum because i am looking into a remap for my 2007 XC90 D5 185BHP, I have just purchased the car.

I have spoken to Don but the idea of having to use something as old as windows xp seems a bit odd.

I have also looked into a company called Quantum Tuning, they have dealers offering remaps for £250, have you heard of them?

How is it going with your car and the remap? Would you recommend MTE over any other remapper? MTE just seems expensive. Do you know if MTE is still providing Don with files or is Don just selling existing remap files?

Thanks,

Tahir
