Default buying 2nd hand T5 / R (70 series)

Hi. Would anyone be good enough to tell me what potential problems there are with buying 2nd hand T5 / R's i.e. what sort of mileages the turbos last for etc? Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
Many Thanks!

Have a trawl through previous posts , there are plenty on the subject but for starters.Check air con works and all electrics , windows sunroof ect.Turbos are usually good for at least 100k but listen for any whines and all other checks for buying a used car.Hope you get a good one and enjoy

Hi,

Expensive bits...air con evaporator...dash board out to replace, oil leaks could mean gearbox out. These cars shouldn't have any oil leaks at all but 'O' ring on dipstick tends to go so if there is oil about then check that. Turbos seem reliable, slight whine is Ok. Thermostat goes @ 100,000 check water temp comes up quickly then stays @ 3 o'clock, cheap to replace. Rattles from suspension usually can be fixed quite cheaply.

Check full service history especially cam belt @ 80,000

Otherwise these are great & reliable performance cars.

Have you any ideas about the auto box models, are the gearboxes reliable on higher mileage ones and are the clutches durable on manual models?

The auto boxes can give trouble with the PNP switch - a simple move back and forward 20 times can clean this - and need the ATF changing at around the 50-60k mark despite what volvo say.

If they're looked after like this, they should give little or no trouble.

There has been a thread on clutches for manuals - mine makes a slight squeal on application which the dealer said was normal for the R clutch - certainly it has given absolutely no trouble since I bought the car.

Either type of transmission is fine; the performance loss on an auto is insignificant.
