I found it less economical when i was running with heavy traffic as itwould constantly accelerate hard to get bak up to speed if I had to brake. Also u can ease of and accelerate gradually without it hen needed

.....with the info centre when using foot control on the motorway the mpg figure is difficult to control economically, but when i am on cruise control the mpg figure is surprisingly controlled and does prove for me to be more easy on the fuel........

i recently did a 190 round trip to north wales, mpg was 57, around town normally get around 38, 02 reg 115bhp diesel v40 (184k)

Exactly the same for me, when on cruise I have the instant fuel showing and the readings are much more stable than I can do with my foot.

Glad to know, maybe the XC60 is differant then. at least on the V/S40 it's more economical with cruise on

on my v70 2.5 diesel year 2000 i'm averaging 46.8mpg, which is mainly country roads and a small bit of town use, on a recent trip to bordeaux in france i averaged around 54mpg at speeds around 90mph. So it was definatley worth the extra hunting out a diesel one, and its like of refinement at low speed can be overlooked.

My '97 102,000-mile 2.0 V40 used to be capable of driving from Carlisle to Arras in N France on one tank of petrol - about 450 road miles - with two people and a light load on, and around 70-75mph. (Of course we take advantage of a boat for 20-odd miles of it - even a Volvo can't motor on water). That's an average of just over 40mpg.

Last time I measured the same journey, with three people and quite a lot more gear in the back for a longer hol, it turned in 404.....had to fill up on the amber light just before the Dover ferry terminal, so about 37mpg.

When my mum was in hospital over in the north East last year I drove over there and ferried my dad backwards and forwards to visit her for several days...lot of time spent on the A1 and I deliberately kept as close to 60 mph as poss - turned in 505 miles on one tank. ie 46mpg.

However, I recently treated the fuel system with some stuff I hadn't previous heard of - BG 44K - and not only is the engine now sounding and pulling like it did 60-odd thousand miles ago, but on a half tank of gas, mixed driving, a lot around town, it has managed more than 230 miles (42mpg). I'll report in again at the end of the tank. The car will also be going down the west coast ofr France next month and I'll be recording its performance in detail (just to annoy Ms Dodger49 as much as anything else). I'll be dead keen to see the mpg results for sustained crusing.

Just done a 600-mile outing this weekend - mainly a mixture of M-way and A roads, taking no special care to be economical (plenty of foot-to-floor overtaking to make reasonable progress in E Sussex in particular, where time for many people seems to have slowed to an intolerable standstill...). Started with full tank, and filled up again after 455 miles when the gauge showed 45 miles left and started flashing at me. About 37mpg at 45mph average. Info centre agrees and seems to be accurate.

If my info centre is to be believed, about 50mpg could be achieved on cruise control at a steady 50mph. Slowing down really does help, as all the advice says - it's simple aerodynamics. That said, slowing down is no substitute for having a diesel if this is what you care about. I achieved an easy 44mpg average last week in a borrowed V70 2.5D with 220k miles on, taking even less trouble to be economical...

Driving with an eco right foot I can readout average MPG up to 24.5 mpg but drops to 22 wihen booting it. Average with my granny driving style is 23.5 mpg. Average speed is consistantly 22 mph.
Please give average speed with average mpg if you can.

I don't get this: I thought the tank was 60 litres i.e. about 13.3 gallons. In which case this surely works out as 38 mpg (???)
