Default C70 electric roof problems!

Hi. Looking for some advice in respect of a 2001 C70 with electric roof. Just bought this car at a good price as the roof doesn't appear to work. Previous owner has spent considerable money sorting previously and it has stopped again. I am not sure of the exact fault until I have collected the car and had a fiddle!!! Just trying to get a few pointers or tips to help out. Are there any obvious or common faults with these? I know very little about them to be fair!! Many thanks.

Does it not work at all? What happens when you push the switch, does anything move? Does the light on the switch come on when you push the button?

The main roof control module is known to fail, around £1200-£1300 new from Volvo but you can pick a used one up for about £150 with a warranty (that's what I paid when replacing mine from a trader on here), but I have seen them for £80 untested and with no warranty. Very easy to replace if that is the fault, 10 minute job.

£118 for Volvo to diagnose the fault, but they diagnosed mine wrong. Said it was the window module, replaced that but the fault was still the same. They investigated further and it was only when they sent the readings to the technical centre in Sweden that they came back and said it was the roof module.

Post the symptoms once you've picked the car up and had a fiddle

Thanks guys. All the seller said was last time he used it the roof stopped about 1ft away from closing fully. The RAC guy came out and powered the motor up and it closed. Not been used since. I didn't try the roof as was about to rain and the car was outside. I should have it tomorrow or Monday. Once safely in the garage I will press the button and see what happens!! Many thanks.

Make sure you are in P with the handbrake on, assuming you have auto ;-).

Got the car back home and under cover. Drives very well I have to say. Anyway the roof button lights up okay. When you press it all 4 windows go down about 2 inches then stop. By pressing the button again they go a further 2 inches. Eventually the windows reach the bottom. If you press and hold the button for down operation you can hear a motor running I think but nothing happens!! Sounds like the motor noise is coming from the boot? If you press it to go back up the windows don't move. However they will all go back up independently using the window buttons. There is what looks like a motor under a cover on inside of roof panel at the front, not heard any sign of life from that yet. Any ideas? Will have another play tomorrow!! Many thanks.

The windows should drop a couple of inches when you push the button down, and then the next step is for the rear window section to lift up. It sounds like the operation is starting ok but then getting stuck at that point. There are a lot of microswitches in the system so I wonder if one of those has failed. If the microswitch isn't working then the car may not be able to tell if the rear window is latched down or not, so it might be stopping the operation to prevent damage. On the other hand, it could be that the roof control module is faulty and isn't picking up the signal properly so the module is stopping the operation.

To be honest, with the symptoms you have I think it's going to be really difficult to try and work out where the fault is without a proper diagnostic. Otherwise you might end up just replacing parts in the hope that you're replacing the faulty bit.

Cayman autos in Surrey might be worth a call, they are convertible specialists and seem to know their stuff. They have dealer level equipment so should be able to diagnose. If you do decide to go there negotiate on the price though, they wanted £120 for a roof calibration but dropped to £60 without any trouble at all. Bit of a trek from where you are but not too bad and worth it if you get an answer. It's not a bad run down, the company I work for has an office in Stratford Upon Avon as well so I have to run up there from Kent sometimes and it's an ok trip.

Thanks Mike. Not familiar with these Volvos so all help welcome. I do chauffeur work in my V70 D5 so am down at Heathrow/Gatwick regularly. Shame that I couldn't use this C70 for my job as would be in the right area!! I will call Cayman Autos anyway. Thank you.

Hi Mike

You seem to be the expert on this issue .. My roof button does not work or light up nor does my defrost rear window button. I did change a few of the fuses around and it work a time but now no power again.

What should I do
