Default which volvo oil?

changed the gearbox oil about 15 years ago not done enough miles to warrant doing it again, but I need to replace the gearbox driveshaft oil seal on the drivers side of the box.

spoken to frf and they have a couple of different gearbox oils coming up for my car, some of which say they supersede the older spec.

anyone know what should be in it? going to see if I still have a small bottle of it when I get home.

As far as I recall manual box takes 75W-80 GL-4. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

Default ok bit more info

so Volvo parts system is saying this replaces:

1 l 31280 771
4 l 31280 772
This oil is fully synthetic transmission oil for manual gearboxes
with excellent shifting and synchronising properties at all
temperatures, especially at low temperatures. Being a low
friction oil, the temperature in the transmission is reduced.
Viscosity is low, which means reduced fuel consumption which
in turn means less environmental impact.
The oil is recommended for all model years of type M65
(5-speed with 6-cyl. engine), M66, MTX75 and MMT6 and of
the type M56, M58 and M59 from and including model year
1996.
Technical data
Quality: API GL-4
Ford specification
WSS-M2C200-D2
Viscosity: SAE 75W
Color: Brown
Density: 852 kg/m³
Base: Synthetic base oil
Lowest flow point -54°C
Viscosity at +40°C: 32 mm²/s
Viscosity at +100°C: 6.4 mm²/s

this:

1 l 1161 645
A multigrade synthetic transmission oil intended for manual
transmissions in passenger cars.
The oil has very good low temperature characteristics and a
lowest flow point of at least -48°C.
The transmission oil is recommended for all model years of
types M45, M46, M47, M90 and M5M42 in S-/V40 with GDI
engine and of type M56, M58 and M59 up to and including
model year 1995.
Technical data
Quality: API GL-4
Volvo Std 1273,08 which
describes transmission oil
97308
Viscosity: SAE 75W
Color: Brown
Density: 885 kg/m³
Base: Synthetic
Lowest flow point -48 °C (104°F)
Viscosity at 40°C: 67.8 mm²/s
Viscosity at 100 °C: 10.5 mm²/s

but a very helpful dealer who has experience of taking apart gearboxes says he would use this, as its closer to the spec of the original oil in viscosity:

High quality transmission oil for manual transmissions where
specification API GL 4/ Ford std. WSD-M2C200-C is required.
The oil is a low friction oil and is a great performer for use
in extreme cold and hot weather conditions. The oil is
recommended for use in transmission IB5.
Technical data
Quality: API GL 4 (WSD-M2C200-C)
Viscosity: SAE 75W-90
Color: Brown
Density: 873 kg/m³
Base: Synthetic
Lowest flow point -54 °C (104°F)
Viscosity at 40°C: 76 mm²/s
Viscosity at 100 °C: 15.4 mm²/s

as im having to replace one drive shaft oil seal I will probably do both. my concern is if I use the newer thinner oil will it find its way through to the clutch from the internal oil seal im not replacing?

having said that just looking though the chemical pdf this looks an even better match but says its for XC90 chain gear:

1 l 1161 745
A fully synthetic transmission oil with extremely good low
temperature characteristics with a lowest flow point of at least
-60 °C. The oil is recommended for the chain gear in XC90
6-cyl. AWD 03-.
Technical data
Quality: API GL-4
Volvo transmission oil
MTF 97309
WSS-M2C200-C3
Viscosity: SAE 75W-80
Color: Amber
Density: 841 kg/m³
Base: Fully synthetic
Lowest flow point -60 °C (104°F)
Viscosity at 100 °C: 59.8 mm²/s
Viscosity at 40 °C: 10.1 mm²/s

interestingly the MTF number is:

97308 for the old oil

and

97309 for the xc9-0 AWD stuff.
