87 or 90 degree thermostat ?
I am changing the thermostat on my 850, from what I can tell from manuals etc, it has an 87 degree thermostat.
Eurocar parts only sell a 90 degree one, will it be detrimental if I get this ? or should I get the 87 degree from elsewhere. Any help or tips would be appreciated ! Si 850 GLT '92 2.0 20valve |

Wax thermostats are only accurate to +/- 15%. Therefore a 3 degree difference in the spec won't make a hoot of difference. |

RE: 87 or 90 degree thermostat ?
used to have a 360 that you could fry eggs on the bonnet, one dealer wanted to sell me a 90 or 92c stat, was some years back now so cant remeber clearly, the other one said i should have an 87 or 88c something like that. anyway went for the 88 and it bought the temp down nicely. so i think the higher temp ones are for colder climates eg sweden, whereas the lower temp ones are for warmer climates, just guessing mind you. anyway id put the lowest temp one in you can find, as ive found with my 850 that the underbonnet temps get quite high, and high temps sometimes lead to premature electrical part failiures and so on.

RE: 87 or 90 degree thermostat ?
Hi ya,
Volvo now only supply if i recall the 90'c T-stat as i did mine in the spring. Don't do what i did and forgot which way the arrow pointed or you will be taking off t-stat head quickly and flipping around the t-stat when you don't want too :-( If your car is old like mine 8+ years it was my original. Its a worth while investment to change the t-stat sensor while you are at it, just a recommendation. Mark old and wiser and still learning :-)

RE: 87 or 90 degree thermostat ?
I changed the thermostat and temperature sensor today and it went pretty smoothy, wherever I looked it seemed that it should have a 87 degree t.stat so I bought one. The one I have removed was a 90 degree !! - The spring was snapped allowing it to be stuck open. Now the heater gets warmer quicker too, it was taking ages to warm up.
I think it was running rich too due to the ECU sensing the engine was colder than it really was. The temp gauge would do down to almost zero when on the motorway. Fingers crossed that all is OK now ! Si 850 GLT 2.0 20v 122K |

Should I replace thermostat?????
Hi all,
Probably loads of previous on this one, but would appreciate some learned advice! Today I did 1/2 the M25 at a steady 80-90 with the odd burst. Its been cold, hovering around 3-5 degrees C. The temperature gauge really did not want to go much above 4 o'clock. Interior warmed up fine and with blower on and off, same engine temp reading. The engine seemed quite lumpy although there was plenty of go. Fuel consumption was not great, around 22-25??? for the trip of 135 miles. 1. Is it the weather and cold motorway cruising or the 'stat? 2. Will it make the engine run rich and explain the 'lumpiness' 3. Didn't check oil and probably could do with a top up, but what is 'typical' oil useage on a manual 850 T5 with 78k up? Other than dealer annual/10k service I may add 1 litre or so. Thanks for any guidance, Chris |

RE: Should I replace thermostat?????
I haven't noticed the 'lumpiness' but at the moment mine is also reluctant to go above 4 o'clock whilst actually driving anywhere. If I stop for a while and just let the engine idle then we are back to 3 o'clock. So I assume this is probably ok, but hopefully someone can say for sure.

In my '98 T5 the needle goes to 3 o'clock, and stays there regardless of summer/winter race track/traffic jam. Same in my '88 240 (sailed through MOT yesterday - very happy chappy!) except it sits around 3.30 - 4

RE: Should I replace thermostat?????
Russ,
Hi there. Are your monitoring fuel consumption at all while the temp guage is down? I just want to feel happy that my engine's ok and not about to become damaged. My gut feel is that when a dial reads different it's trying to tell you something! |

RE: Should I replace thermostat?????
I'm not monitoring mpg as such as I have only just noticed it. I will check next time I fill up but my average varies massively depending on how many long runs the car gets inbetween. Perhaps it might be worth investgating a thermostat change!
