Bl**dy V70 wheel bearings!
I've been getting a droning noise from the front LH of the car, particularly noticeable at 40mph, diagnosed by volvo as a front LH wheel bearing. I've just shelled out £230 to have it replaced - noise is still there! The volve technician thinks the other (RH) bearing is shot and the LH was masking the noise(?) and now thinks I should get the other side replaced as well! The old bearing was definitely shot (he'd saved it to show me) but I'm not too happy to pay again unless I'm fairly certain that it's not something else.
The noise seems to be at wheel speed and I'm now thinking that it could be a driveshaft problem or a wheel bearing. Does anyone know if there is any way of checking wear without stripping everything out? Many thanks in advance for any help. Dave C. |

RE: Bl**dy V70 wheel bearings!
Hi ya,
When i replaced mine i did both to save the hassle. You can test it by turning the way the wheel bearing is on, ie right putting load on it. A growling noise would then indicate it is that particular wheel bearing, if you then check and turn the oposite way and is quiet where you had the mone replaced. As for the the drive shaft, when they had it in the shop they should of dedected that a problem possibly existed there, tears in the boots of either axle ? Mark

Can you not check the same as you could on older cars?
On my Spit you grab the wheel in question and try to move it, rock it top to bottom, (easier with the wheel jacked off the deck). If the wheel has movement, which will feel 'clunky' then the bearing is knackered. Stu |
