i have a 95 850 t5 with tracs and a couple of questions as the manual is vague on use

1. is tracs on when switch is depressed and thus showing a light or on when light off

2. will use of tracs help with decreasing tyre wear

3. how does the tracs work

Yes it is active then i believe.

To be honest no, unless your are flooring it all the time from standing still. Really only useful in snow and very wet conditions.

It works by quickly sensing which wheel is loosing grip and applying for a very short moment the brake on that particular wheel. This is why ABS is required with tracks.

I don't have tracks on mine so I have to drive smoother. But if my tyres are cold and i have to nip out of junction quickly i can cause wheel spin, which tracks would hopefully stop. Also it deactivates after about 20mph, i may be corrected on the actual speed.

Hope that helps,

Mark

With regrd to q1:

>>light or on when light off
>>
>Yes it is active then i believe

Is that yes it is active when the light is on, or yes it is active then when thelight is off?

On mine I press the button to deactivate TRACS....a warning light then shows in the instrument panel.
On the early versions it works by braking the wheel.
IMHO it's pretty useless..I can still spin the wheels at some junctions if I really floor it...though I can feel TRACS come on and try to brake the wheel. It isn't active above a certain speed (is it 15mph?), so is only a low speed device.

as the warning light in the instrument panel does not show when the switch is engaged or disengaged (but does show when engine switched on therefore bulb ok) i presume mine is a earlier version

Hi all,

This is out of my 94 manual.

"if the tracs malfunctions the warning light will come on. It also comes on when the brakes overheat, and goes out again when normal temperature level is reached."

Then button is depressed it will engage upto 25mph.

Hope this clarifies things.

On mine, when pressed, illuminates "TRACS off". I assume therefore, and believe, that they are what it says they are!

Any clearer?

Not very well.

It only works at

a. Low speed

and

b. when one wheel is spinning at a different speed to the other.

So it is still quite easy (especially in a T5) to set off from the lights and spin both wheels without the TRACS kicking in.
