Default V70 AWD 1997 Power Steering "moan"

Hi All,

My 1997 V70 AWD Estate has had a power steering moan on start up until switch off whatever the conditions. I have lived with it but is starting to get on my nerves. I have seen other posts about the brass end piece falling off in the ressie but I can't see any evidence of this, any help appreciated?? Thanks

Ok bit of a mixed bag of an answer as when I had this issue it was on an 850.

If the power steering fluid gets low it starts to moan, then lower still it becomes jerky when turning. Note that the dipstick built into the lid has 2 marks warm and cold.

Also on the xc90 section people with a similar problem have an o ring at the base of the steering column in the car which gets dry and grippy and causes noise. They just lubricate and its gone it seems.

Had that problem on a 51reg V70T5 and had to change the P/S fluid. It can become contaminated just like brake fluid over time. Quite a quick and simple job as the power steering is self bleeding.

I have the same probs with my 98 V70 XC - moan when "heavy" steering - like backing outta my driveway - P/S fluid is ok though (according to my garage) so could there be any other prob? or are they pulling a fast one & I should check myself...

Check the power steering fluid colour as I found mine was brown and doing the same replaced it and flushed the system and has been fine since.

Hi Gus

If you want to change the p/s fluid pop up over the week or over the weekend and I can give you a hand. Very simple job to do without a garage doing it.

Default The reservoir

Is apparently a weak spot in these motors to, if a fluid change doesnt fix it check the interior of the reservoir against a known good one.
