I have a Ph1 v70 2.5T AWD in manual, not many of them around with the same spec, although I have converted mine from a 2.5t to a 2.3 T5 engine, and the awd has broke..
But that'll be getting fixed next year

Up until fairly recently I had a 98 V70 AWD with a T5 turbo bolted on, however the previous owner had abused her somewhat, AWD was shot, both transfer box and prop, plus a gearbox.. Sadly, Valhalla is where she resides now.

On a happier note I may soon be the owner of an '03 V70R AWD...

I'm the proud owner of a 1998 (Saffron) V70R AWD manual, with working AWD!

Doesn't sound like there are many other working AWD Rs left, is mine the only saffron one?

I joined this forum because I was looking for a T5R. Now I want a manual V70R too. Am I asking for trouble using an AWD V70R Manual as a daily driver in London and for long journeys for European or UK holidays? I'm prepared to pay up to £10K for a great example.

I wouldn't say you're asking for trouble!

I've used them, or the coupe versions as my daily drivers for most of the last 4 years. They feel tank like at first but when you get used to it they're really chuckable and you can make a hell of a lot of progress when you want to!

My manual AWD can average about 32mpg on a run if I just sick with traffic. Mine is currently my car of choice for longer runs, if I'd had the jobs I wanted all done in June I'd have taken it to France instead of my Discovery, it would have eaten the miles much more pleasantly!

Are you looking at the 1997-2000 shape or the -2007 shape? Manuals not particularly common in either flavour!

Hiya warninglight

The ones I've been lusting after are -2007. I've spent the last 6 months trying to decide which car to go for, I've looked at Cayenne, Range Rovers, all sorts. I know a T5R and/or V70R AWD will be right for me, I just know it. There are a couple on eBay. I can't really do much till end of month due to work and travel, but early February, I am going to get my act together and pull the trigger. I plan on properly looking after it, I want the best example I can find, high mileage or low, as long as its been looked after.

They're brilliant cars, my brother has an LPG converted 2005 R as his daily driver. It's incredible!

Hi all,

I know this a pretty old thread but thought I'd add a bit of info.

The P80 AWD cars were indeed available with a manual gearbox as already mentioned. It all started with the 1996/1997 850 AWD. I originally believed that all of those came with the M58 gearbox but supposedly there were a few automatics out there (I've never seen one!). This was Volvo's first AWD attempt and the components remained pretty unchanged through 2000 (functionally through 2002 when Volvo started using a Haldex AWD system).

The 1997, 98, 99 and 2000 V70 AWD was available with the M58 AWD gearbox.
Same for the XC version. I was lucky enough to own a 2000 XC SE manual in Sweden years ago.

The 1998 V70 R AWD was also available with the M58 but the 99 and 2000 (ME7 computer equipped cars) did not get a manual option from the factory.

In the U.S. market, the AWD manual gearbox was never available. In Canada the 850 AWD was sold and 7 1998 V70 AWD manuals were sold. Of those original 7, a few have made their way into the U.S. over the years. No manual Rs came to North America.

By now, a few of us have converted their automatic P80 AWDs using the M58 gearbox as this was tough to find in North America. More people have used the more modern M66 gearbox for their conversions. It's pretty straightforward and all the original AWD components work. No need to use a more modern angle gear. For a -1998 model the original automatic axles also work. It's more complicated for 99 and 2000s but there are axles out there that work.

Software on -1998s is easy. Either use a manual ECU from a T5 or manual R/AWD/XC or there are upgraded tunes available now from several tuners. For the ME7 cars there are also now some options through tuners.

Hi All

My Volvo is a '97 ph 1 V70 AWD with M58 Manual gearbox.

They are rare but crop up from time to time.

Sadly, the Head Gasket just went - Hmm, well I suspect the head gasket due to the Mayonnaise in the Header Tank and then the Clutch went!! To be honest though I have put her through her paces.

Anyway, I am thinking of selling for spares or repairs.. PM me if your're interested.

Damz.
