Default Speedometer drive gear

Hi guys..trying to help a friend out as his Speedometer quit and its not the cable or the meter itself. So most likely its the gear in the transmission.

I know that there are several colours which translate the trans rpm to the correct roadspeed.. any idea what would be correct for a car that has a B18 with M40 (no overdrive).

Thanks all!

Anilv;

Welcome to this forum!

Speedo cables need to be clean an lubed (stating the obvious!)...I'd confirm cable and instrument before suspecting gear in gearbox, as replacement requires removal and partial disassembly of gearbox, and so is no small job...I would want to be certain with my troubleshooting...remove cable at the transmission, turn core with a drill and have a helper observe instrument...

To confirm which gear is needed, I'd check exploded assembly diagrams and associated parts listings on GCP.com site. Gear color (and toothcount) is a function of Diff gearing, not presence or absence of OD.

Good Hunting!

Thanks all for the help.

I see that 'classicvolvoparts' has the parts I need. Need to get under the car and pull the old one out (to make sure its really the problem!) before I order it.
