Default V40 - Diesel

This is my first posting so apologies if you've been asked this one a hundred times.

I'm interested in getting my first Volvo and the V40 estate seems to fit the bill. I have test driven one at the weekend at a Volvo dealership. It was a 1.9TD (115 bhp) SE spec on a 53 plate with only 2k on the clock.

Seemed like a nice car but I thought it was expensive (£15.9k sticker price). Given that the model has just gone offline and the V50 is out now, I am expecting big depreciation.

V40 also seems to have had a very cool reception in the motoring press. The diesels seem to be called "unrefined" or "noisy". These things are putting me off a bit so wanted to know if any owners had any thoughts. I will use the car for some fairly long motorway hauls (200 plus miles each way) carrying plenty of sports kit both in the car and on the roof.

Is the V40 a good bet and are their any discounts to be had on the last of the new V40 s ?

Any pointers appreciated.

Rob

£15.9k, thats sounds a little expensive considering you can pick up a V50 diesel for £16.5k.

Thanks, I agree and once more V50s come onto the 2nd hand market then nearly new V40s should fall in price. On the same website there are quite a few other approved used V40s of the same spec going for £1-2k less. Dealer seems oblivious to this of course !

Any V40 diesel owners out there with any good/bad experience or comments ?

Hi,
I have a 2002 mod on 51 plate V40SD (Sport Trim) It's now done over 60k and I'm very pleased with it. Going to and from work in Kent (there are a couple of steep hills on the way) I'm averaging 47mpg. When I go to visit my parents in Cabridgeshire I get 53mpg (two up).

I've had a few different company cars, all oil burners, Vectra, Astra, Escort and second cars Honda CRV, Trooper, Zantia, AX14 all petrol. My V40 is by far the best all rounder, well apart from off road!

I have treated the engine with ZX1 friction eliminator that made a vast differance in noise and smoothness.

The only other car that has come close to my V40 was a peugeot 307SW (new one) in Spain.

Get the V40 Oil Burner!
