Default b230 whine

Morning guys,

I have a b230 with turbo, its very recently started an engine speed related whine. Sounds similar to a power steering pump wine but that reservoir is full.

Any ideas? My auto box has PRND21 with a top gear disable on the side. It recently has also started to behave strange when changing up - I pretty much need to completely ease off the pedal!

I assume this is a 7 or 9 series? Does the whine occur when the shifter is in park, or only when driving? Have you checked that the ATF is topped up and pink (not burnt-looking)?

Cheers for the reply, yep its a 7.

Does happen in park/neutral, I can't hear it in the engine bay when I stand next to it but I can hear it while I'm in the car.
Levels look fine when hot and cold, fluid is red and looks/feels fresh!

May be worth a check on your cambelt tensioner.
If very high mileage, I have had some begin to get rough and noisy.
It is easy enough to pull the belt off and give it a spin , for peace of mind.
This would be revs rather than road speed dependant.
Good luck,
James.

Thanks for your suggestions guys.

I've managed to record the noise! This is me sitting in the drivers seat, in park, reving from idle (800) up to around 2.2K. Sounds like its in Reverse but its in Park!

Seems more prominent under the car/drivers side. Have used a length of garden hose to go around the car and can't find anywhere obvious that is making this level of noise - however I did hear a noise toward the rear of the engine, where the gearbox is.

Have you eliminated alternator, steering pump, and water pump, by temporarily slipping the belts off?

For a whine I always suspect those things first. And that is an obvious way to check ... thanks. I'll try to remember that.
