Default 240 electric speedo

Just wondering - has anybody else had the same problems as me when replacing electric speedo head unit. Only changing it because the mileage trip gave up and I can't do the micro-surgery engineering that is suggested elsewhere to replace cogs.
Its power comes via a 3-wire nylon plug-in thingie which goes onto the back of the unit and is secured by a fantastically over-engineered plastic push-in clamp - which on my car doesn't. It keeps falling out so have temp jammed it in with a wadge of card.
Before I bin that clamp and drill it for my favourite connection - nuts and bolts, has anybody else had similar problems? Most of the time I can't get any electricity to the warning lights etc: does that mean the little biscuit thing has naff connections and should be replaced too?
Bring back the good old cable I say - it has been OK for the last century or so, so why change it?

The plastic clamp thingie is one-time-only use I think, a kind of tamper-evident clip to prevent clocks being chopped and changed about so 'easily', though I cant see a buyer whipping the cluster out to check on it! I've never replaced one, anyway, I bin them when removing/changing clocks. I forget the exact nature of the connections, but can the contacts be pinched up a bit with a pair of pliers to give a tighter grip? I also seem to recall the LH2.4 90-93 clocks had the same connector but with 4 contacts in the same space instead of 3, the extra contact is for a speed signal to ECU. hope that isn't your prblem!

edit: I think the connector on the back of the speedo is speedo only, warning lights are handled by the two round and semi-circular plugs that also plug into the cluster. the amp warning light also has its own connection, a spade connector that's either red/white or red/yellow, I forget which.

There's a snap-off clip that you have to break the first time it's unplugged. I've swapped them several times and always found that it stays plugged even without the safety clip.

Would a lump of Blutack hold it in place?
