I think if you’re using an external battery charger you’ll hit problems unless it’s capable of charging an AGM battery. Different charging schedules and voltages. I imagine a normal battery charger would only get you 50-60% charged.

Toggling corner lights did nothing. Stop start works when it wants to

An update. Car was left with the dealers for a few days whilst I was away. They flashed software updates and charged the battery, saying that the stop start system now seemed to be working.

It isn't. Its usual mode is greyed out, even after a 90 mile motorway run charging the battery it either works once and then greys out on restart, or doesn't work at all.

Anyone had a successful fix for a flaky stop start system? I'm not bothered about the fuel burned, its more that I don't like sitting in a queue churning out fumes.

Thought it would be a good thing if it stopped working, saves you having to turn it off all the time!

There is a very strong possability your battery will be faulty, there have been several people on here "which I am one" that had the same issue which was resolved with a battery replacement under warranty.
Before the new battery was fitted stop start would only work if battery charged via smart charger but only lasted a few days then stop start no longer worked, car would always start ok but battery would not maintain enough charge for stop start to work.

Thanks for the tip- I will suggest that to the dealers

Although I had my battery changed under warranty and stop start has worked fine ever since I am not sure which battery was changed, as there are two, the starter battery and the stop start support battery. I suspect it was the main battery but I never asked them.

The only conclusion I have come to is that the battery and charging system fitted by Volvo is not fit for this purpose.
My new XC60 D4 has now done just 2850km. The S/S gave up about 500km ago. I have to take it in for a recall (tailgate lifting arms issue: Recall R89910)
so I’ll raise this issue.

.....and I was another “one” with my previous XC60 with exactly the same issues and always being told the Battery was fine from the dealers test which did not cause my any concerns as I would normally turn the ‘stop-start’ off anyway.
It was not until my 3rd year service just before I sold the car to my next door neighbour that I insisted upon a solution to the issue when the dealer did a proper VIDA battery test which found the battery to be faulty and was replaced under warranty........and this was the same battery’s that had passed the dealers normal/standard test only 5 minutes previously.
So always insist upon the full VIDA test that produces a printed diagnostic report......

I have a rarely working stop/start system (leaving aside any view about whether the system is useful or not!). It doesn't help not using the car on a regular daily basis, but even after charging it works the next day, but not if then left for a day. Conversely, my V40 with similar system works even when not used for a week. The dealer tells me no defect (fault) code so can't claim on warranty. Any more information or ideas that I can use to 'encourage' the dealer to find a solution?
