Will not rev over 1200RPM
Good evening folks, I'm hoping to pick your brains with regards to my 2.0D S40 SE enginne not willing to rev beyond 1200 RPM. Currently the car is stuck on my drive way and is unable to be driven anywhere. I've plugged an OBD II reader into the port and read the codes, I'm seeing the following:
Vehicle 2005 S40 SE 2.0D 89000 miles, regular service as per manufacturers spec. P0098 IAT Sensor 2 Circuit High P0099 IAT Sensor 2 Circuit Intermittant P1201 #1 Injector Circ Open/Shorted Can anyone shed any light on the above? What resistance should I be able to read across each injector? What resistanace should the IAT sensor be. First thing tomorrow I'm going to go out with a wire brush and a can of WD40 to clean and spray the contacts on all of the injectors and the IAT. Any suggestions or info would be greatly appreciated. Update.
I've been out and had a play in the light of day. I measured the resistance across all of the injectors, all 4 were the same @ 200K Ohms (ambient temp around 6°C) Resistances across the loom connections to engine earth 100K Ohms (standing in front of the car left connection in plug) and 435K Ohms (standing in front of the car right connection in plug) resistances on all 4 connectors the same. Upon unplugging the connections it was immediately apparent that there was a build up of dust and dirt inside of the injector connectors, #1 being the worst. Blew dirt out with compressed air, gave both pins on all injectors a little rub over with some 120 grit sand paper on a flat bladed screwdriver then blew debris out again with compressed air. Sprayed WD40 into injector connector and plug on loom then slid each plug on and off the injector connector between 5 and 10 times before firmly seating the plug back onto the injector. Plugged OBDII reader into car and erased codes. Started engine, running fine. Taken for drive and all seems OK. My suspicion is that the dust and dirt gets damp in the cold wet weather we are currently having and becomes slightly conductive, adjusting the resistance across the injectors which confuses the car's ECU into thinking there's an issue with the Injector. Only time will tell but fingers crossed. -G. |

Update 2.
Since the above was carried out, The fault has appeared again twice, however with error code 1201 (Injector #1) and 1203 (Injector #3) on different occasions. When this happens I unplug all of the injectors, and re connect them, erase the codes and the engine runs fine. I am aware that this is just a work around and not a fix. I am also aware that the car has a "weak" starter motor and I am wondering if this may have some bearing on the fault codes that I am reading. If the engine struggles to start due to the starter being weak, would this confuse the ECU when it almost fires up but doesn't and goes back to cranking over? I will be getting the starter replaced when funds permit. Any thoughts would be greatly received and appreciated. Thanks G. |

Update 3:
Have been using the car now for the past 2 weeks and have not had any issues. I hope that this does not jinx it. After my last post I had the lazy starter motor replaced. The car spends a lot of time sat on my drive exposed to all wind, rain and freezing temps. Since the replacement starter was fitted it fires up quickly first time every time. I am making the assumption that the bad starter was causing the ECU some confusion when the engine would almost fire up but then go back to cranking, when this happened a lot of blue(ish) smoke would come pouring out of the exhaust (un-combusted diesel) once it eventually started running both in fault condition or normally. Hopefully I can put this fault to bed now. We love our car and would hate to have to trade it in. G. |
