I wonder how much of this comes down to kerb weight? I think the Volvo is carry around 500lbs more than the BMW but haven't got exact figures to hand.

Yes I know it is a lot heavier than the others, but what is the point of the whole complex engineering? I doubt it is more economical compared to the other three! All these batteries are a dead weight and everything is more expensive to fix and produce. Instead of making a very good 6 cylinders turbo engine, they made something pointless IMO! |

However, looking at the S60 T8 from the perspective of someone who wants to be able to travel 20 - 30 miles on pure electric, never worry about range, achieve good MPG on average journeys, have excellent safety facilities and be able to show a clean set of heals to most other things on the road... it probably makes great sense

I understand what you mean, but when will the 20-30 miles of pure electric (which cost money as well) justify the price and penalty of the weight? In my opinion NEVER!!! |

Volvo will have a much smaller development budget for their car compared to the other 3.

The appeal lies in company car tax buyers IMO.
BMW & Audi at around £7k tax for a higher rate taxpayer versus about £3.5k for the Volvo. The Mercedes even higher than the BMW & Audi (around £8k I think). My XC60 T8 is now due for delivery on the 14th after nearly an 8 month wait (hooray!) and I'm afraid I do feel rather smug when I notice that I will be paying less in company car tax than my brother who has a diesel Passat with a list price of about half the amount! |

Weight will always be the biggest enemy of performance. Lightest car out there is the quickest despite not having the most power, traction or torque.
Volvo are built to feel substantial. That will never make them quick.

Lighter cars + launch control mean that this was never going to be a fair fight. Tyre choice is also going to have an impact on a day like that too.

A quick glance does reveal that the Volvo is (at least officially) faster than the Audi to 60 but obviously not what they were testing there exactly... Interesting anyway. The fact that around 80% of the power is to the front wheels only probably doesn't help either.
