It could be one of over a dozen causes , best get the dealer to let you know ...

Try charging the battery, it is the easiest thing to do to try and resolve it yourself, at least you will know it is not that if fault still there.

afaik a low battery won't trigger that error message, the system just won't work.

Bear in mind, other criteria needs to be satisfied for this to work (detailed in other threads, but eg: not too cold outside)

Low battery was the cause when I had that message, hadn't driven it for 6/7 weeks due to work/covid. It went away after leaving it on charger over a weekend. Not come back in a year and I now connect charger if it's not being driven for a few weeks.

Obviously someone else cause might be different, but worth a shot.

I will mention I hooked up charger using points under bonnet as per manual, direct to battery isn't recommended by Volvo!

Blimey, I missed these replies. Sorry all.

I find that charging the battery fixes it for about 3 or 4 days, but then the message comes back on. I've had the (main) battery replaced, but still no joy. This Tech Journal from Volvo seems to suggest a battery reset is required (https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/20...79685-9999.pdf).

I can't work out how to remove the BSCM 'S' Cable though - It's too dark to work out what sort of attachment clip it has and I don't want to pull too hard on it.

how did you charge the battery by the way?

It needs a standard basic 10A+ charger connected for 48 hours or more if you can , the battery will be sulphated due to lack of use , In most cases this long charge does the trick . The new computer controlled chargers are useless for this task they say fully charged after an hour or so ...

Volvo advise charging your battery every TWO WEEKS to keep it in top condition when not being used in todays circumstances ..

I took it to our local independent Volvo specialist (Voltech in Glasgow), who replaced it for me.

I've tried charging for 48 hours - both the old battery and the new one. Exact same behaviour on both! I'm using the car 3-4 times a week, although I certainly wasn't when the problem first started during the first lockdown.
