engine fault help please. potential swirl control?

Hi all. 2006 v70 D5 185 with 138000 came up with the engine management message 2 days ago. Whilst I'm waiting for the obd2 reader to arrive I changed the fuel filter and also noted the arm had come off the nipple on the swirl arm control motor.

Full of smugness thinking I'd sorted it by pushing the arm back on to the nipple, I tried a test drive and found I've made it much worse!

initial symptoms were normal acceleration up to around 2000 revs then nothing after that. Now it is really struggling to pick up revs at all. 0-30 mph is probably about 8 seconds!

I'm unfamiliar with this type of fault and would really appreciate any advice.

Sent ur obd2 reader back , they are usually not competible .
Use torque with a cheap elm 237 bluetooth adapter its cheaper and better

If the swirlarm comes off it definitly throws up a code and dim message , limpmode that severe i m not sure .
So you need to fix that arm regardless what codes you read out ( it affects fuelconsumption and soot production in the low load area ) , you can buy the volvo repair kit for 5 pounds . or even better : a small zip tie but you need to make a hole on the both arm ends to connect

Many thanks for the advice. Any thoughts regarding the worsening of the limp home type symptoms. It was in limp home mode when the arm was still off but still drove reasonably. It got much worse when I put the arm went back on.

Take it of and see if it gets better, maybe the limpmode is a coincendence with another fault
If it gets better when its off then it needs callibrated , it can be done with vida but also with every 5 th engine shutdown automaticly

Hey 5cilinder.

I took it back off and things improved although it does not seem to self calibrate. I turned engine on and off around 10 times and the same slight mvmt of the arm happened each time. is this likely to suggest it's goosed and needs replacement or external recalibration may work?

I've noticed that after the engine stops there is a high pitched whine happening from the motor area but no movement of the arm at that time. I'm guessing it needs replacing. does anyone know if this is an expensive fix. I'm planning on doing it myself. Thanks

The high pitched whine is the callibration for several sensors(each shutdown) including the swirlarm (every 5th shutdown)
It could make sense that if the armmotor is jammed that the swirlarm is not moveable(when connected) wich is worse if the swirlvalves are closed and cannot open with accelleration . and could invoke limpmode
Than are open with a loose arm.
I suspect when you can readout the ecu there should also be a code for the jammed motor

You can also verify this with a connected swirlarm and open bonnet and let someone else rev the engine a bit with short jerks . with a normal functioning motor and arm you would see the arm move.
Also before you blame the motor in the absence of moving , disconnect the arm from the dc motor and check if the swirlvalves themselves are not stuck by trying to move the arm connected to the valves and disconnected from the motor

An other possibillity would be that the pole between cilinders is broken and that the motor would move but internally not all swirlarms can be moved
