Can anyone recommend a particular JWS 3309 grade Transmission Oil brand?


can get the below 3 brands (all jws 3309 rated) but wild varying in price:

Castrol Transmax Z £209 for 20 litres
Mobil atf 3309 £159 for 20 litres
Smith & Allen atf 3309 £66 for 20 litres

Any recommendations?

Smith and Allan are a reputable company and have been established many years.

I have done sump dumps on my last XC70 and current XC90 using 20 ltrs their JWS 3309 each time and it is absolutely fine.

Huge difference in price there and I know what I would use.

just what I was thinking! The Mobil one isn't even fully synthetic either

I've used Mobil 3309 here in New Zealand, and the product's made in korea here. It's been fine for me. Slightly cheaper here 20L for just under 100 quid.

I used Smith and Allan ATF JWS 3309. 88GBP at the time. Your 66GBP looks a good buy.

Mileage was about 110K and the oil was in a pretty bad state and the TX was a bit rough shifting so i went with the above stuff from ebay. Its certainly cheaper stuff by my XC90 is getting on and i have had no dramas yet. I drive 120Miles a day.

I have used Carlube ATF-U, fully synthetic, but cannot remember where I bought it.

This is a pretty debated topic. After searching for technical specifications for several 3309 oil brands, I realized not a single one of these is similar to another one. They do comply to the 3309 norm - which is one characteristic, but all other characteristics (viscosity, etc) all differ from brand to brand. A very heated question is which of the brands of the market has exactly the same 3309 oil as what is being sold in the genuine Volvo bottles. While many agree that it's Mobil who makes the oil for Volvo, there is no proof that Mobil 1 3309 is exactly the same as Genuine Volvo. Mind you, the Genuine Volvo oil is not synthetic. Lately, some seem to say the Idemitsu 3309 oil has similar viscosity with the Genuine Volvo. Yet to be proved https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/vol...itsu-1161540kt

I plan a simple drain and refill shortly and have been researching options. I emailed Comma oils and they recommend their Comma ASW semi synthetic oil rated 3309. My concern is that the original oil is probably mineral oil and since I'll be leaving 2/3rds of the original oil in the gearbox I need something to mix properly. Comma assure me that their oil will be suitable. I know that if I was changing engine oil from mineral to synthetic I'd be recommended to flush out the old oil completely . . . because they may not mix.
Do Volvo offer mineral 3309 spec oil for older cars and synthetic 3309 spec for newer cars? . . . or did I dream this?

I’ve got Comma ASW in my 2003 XC90, it’s been in there since I replaced the gearbox 40k miles ago and it’s been fine. It’s still cherry red.

My understanding is you’re ok mixing just about any spec of JWS3309, but care should be taken mixing 3309 with AW-1 which is synthetic and Volvo started using on XC90 models around MY13 (strangely a couple of years later than on all other models that use the same gearbox). That said though I’ve never read of anyone doing that and having problems... Comma’s AW-1 spec product is MVATF plus.
