I've a screwed outer n/s CV joint that only clicks in the 'normal knackered CV joint' way. If a bit broke off internally I suppose it could grind a bit..hard to know.. but I reckon if that was the case it will self destruct sooner rather than later. I don't think you'd be able to feel play in one and I suspect the only way to be sure is to examine the joint by removing a shaft and cut the boot off. Not that hard to do but I dread the expense at about £300 for the joint. |

Get the car up on ramps and check the clearance twixt the front exhaust pipe and the engine cross member... We've had similar symptoms and it turned out that the engine mounts had deteriorated to the point the the engine was low enough for the two parts to hit each other when accelerating... Hope that helps...

Finally fixed!
Oh what joy - it's finally fixed!!! Thanks to the Bridgend's Volvo Specialist 01636 769769, who I heartily recommend. They're excellent and they don't charge the earth.
After months of worry about the possibility of expensive repairs, it turned out to be the lower engine mount beneath the crankshaft pulley end. It had softened so that under hard acceleration or braking the engine was moving excessively and vibrating against the sub-frame.

Hi,
Anvil123 when your Transfer Box failed did it completed wipe out your drive? I have similar symptoms, however is only prevailant at certain engine RPMs and opposed to road road speed. Only use to happen between 2200 and 2500 at 60MPH. Now it is doing it at lower speeds and gears. is only under load also, putting on four wheels, and getting the speed up through the gears and cannot reproduce the scenario which is frustrating. What I have researched suggestions potentially: 1- Torque Converter - however the noise is reasonably gentle in comparison to what i understand a messed up TC is like ).e.g. like a power steering pump that is going out. 2 - Engine mounts - ive replaced them 3 - the exhaust on the lower brackets but the clearance is quite substantial. 4 - Prop shaft .... potentially knackered dampers, however this is a road speed related issue which may not be my issue. Base on my symptoms i wanted to rule out the transmission as it is intermittent and not road speed dependent as well as the prop shaft. I do have a friend who said he would look at it but he is 250Miles away. Need to understand what Transfer box failure actually means! (This is my first AWD as you may have worked out) Thanks for any guidance/comment. |

Anvil 123 was only ever on line around the time of the initial post so unlikely you will get a response

Thanks Dave. I found out the issue. It was simply one of the nut and bolts on the top nearside engine mount just off tight. Re-torqued and issue has gone!
