S80 2.9 petrol
Hi there,
I've come across an advert for what looks to be a very clean 2204 S80 with 116k on the clock. It has the 2.9 litre petrol engine according to the advert. I don't know much about the petrol engines. Is this a good one? I imagine the fuel economy won't be too great, but that's to be expected I suppose.

I forgot to note that its an automatic (2004 plate) & its a six cylinder, not a T6.

The general advice is to avoid that GM 4-speed auto like the plague. Search is your friend.

As above, search a little on this forum see what troubles come most often. Undo the oil cap see how much gunk is on it, much means neglected ol changes, that may cause problems. The timing belt needs be done, some for the PCV, wishbones as well, check for power steering leaks at the rack, if the ride is harsh, dampers and spring seats need replaced. Since it's the non turbo, the transmission should be fine, but have it warmed up and feel for smooth shifting and no slipping. These cars have more electric modules and sensors that will go bad so more to spend. The GM transmission was terrible on the XC90, but the S80 being lighter was less sensitive, especially on the non turbo version. So yes, a thirsty car but also comfy on the road, great seats, good legroom in front.

So what automatic gearbox is the one to go for in the petrol models if the four speed one is troublesome & what model year should I be looking at (S80)?
Thanks

The 4 speed GM transmission was problematic mostly in the XC90 because of the the extra car weight that was over the transmission specs. In the S80, I have rarely heard of a failed GM transmission, unless it had high miles or was abused.

Thanks for your reply. Is this transmission just a 4 speed Geartronic, so an older version & less gears than the TF-80 SC as an example used in the newer models?
