Metal Lathe

Realise this is a bit off topic but you never know. Looking for a metal lathe, preferably a Colchester Student or one similar, if anyone has one for sale or knows of someone thinking of selling please get in touch.

Hi Mitch, do you have 3 phase available? I went for a Harrison M300 as it is what i trained on as an apprentice. It is 3 phase so i run it through a rotary 3 phase inverter. This web site has information on just about every lathe ever produced, www.lathes.co.uk

Thanks Mark. A Harrison M300 would be good as well and I'm looking at those as well. Colchester lathes were the popular brand when I did my apprenticeship in oz, we had them at work and at college so I remember them well and really looking forward to getting a wee workshop setup. Would also like to get a milling machine and a sheet metal folder later on. I actually don't know if there is 3 phase or not at the new workshop, the one thing I didn't check. If not I was thinking of changing the motor but a inverter sounds like a very good idea thanks.

With an inverter you can then also power other 3 phase machines which i found i could buy at a better price and better quality than the Chinese made stuff. I have a Bridgeport milling machine , power hack saw, belt & disc linisher, polishing machine and off hand grinder, metal cutting band saw. All are 3 phase but i can only run one machine at once. You can get Digital inverters and create a 3 phase ring in your work shop and power all machines at once. The best solution though is having 3 phase available

Oh very nice indeed Mark, that sounds like a great workshop you've set up. I'll look at a inverter if there isn't 3 phase, I don't think there will be but you never know your luck.

I recently picked up a copying machine from www.jetmachinery.eu based in birmingham and they had loads of metalworking gear in their warehouse.A lot of big industrial stuff,but also loads of small folders and presses etc.They seemed very helpfull guys to deal with,Hope this helps in your quest.Dave
