You can stop it from hesitating by disabling DTSC when you start the car.
Yes, I've been turning DSTC off. Why straight to wheel bearing and not check sensor and inspect ring first?

The clue is that you say it does it when turning, if there is play in the bearing the lateral force on the wheel during turning can move the hub and affect the distance between the ring an sensor.

I have personally had this issue on my own car, but on the rear...

You might find the ring/sensor are damaged if they have touched.

Thanks, I've heard of that scenario, but surely worth having a gander first? It's now doing it without turning, and kicks up the message as soon you start moving! It never did it at higher cornering speeds, like fast roundabouts with a fully laterally loaded bearing. Also the front left bearing is the only that's been replaced! (Albeit quite some time ago)

We had a similar issue on our older V70 2004. There was a small crack in the ring. It was just starting to touch the sensor. Had we not replaced the ring quickly, it would have destroyed the sensor too. But now the sensor survived, so only the ring needed to be replaced.

Definitely work checking first as if you can do that yourself - it costs nothing.

All I would add is that in my case, there was no detectable play in the wheel bearing when checked with it off the ground, but replacing it cured my symptoms (same as yours)

I have had cause to change sealed bearings with no sign of wear on my caravan. No play at all in any direction even with pry bar, however with just hub, no brake drum or wheel flicking the hub so that it rotated at speed gave the thruppeny bit whir, where the races had pitted over time. This wear was undetectable with the unit biuld up. I now also remove the pads and spin the hub when checking sealed hub bearings on the car.

Ok, thanks! I heard from Volvo some years back that these bearings don't necessarily show play when they're worn, like bearings of old!

I'm braced for a bearing replacement if that's what it needs but might as well check it out first. I think the sensors are only £25ish, so if I can get away with that...........

When I did mine I bought a new sensor anyway as there was so much play in the bearing the sensor had contacted the ring.

I bought a Ford Kuga AWD one on e-bay for £8.25, came in an "Intermotor" brand box, when I opened it it was an identical one to the one removed (ATE brand).

Mine was rear though.

Update:

So the ABS light has been on permanently for the last 6 months, and the ABS/DSTC service message comes on as soon I start drving. Had to get it sorted this week as MOT due.

It was the bearing, as had been suggested. It seems a lot of water and muck had got in where the tone ring is and there was plenty of corrosion. New bearing and a replacement sensor (which I already had) fitted and all is well.

Is there some sort of seal that had failed that's supposed to keep things clean?
