MK3 V70 Exhaust Tip

My 2008 V70 exhaust tip points downwards from the rear silencer, and doesnt protrude past the rear of the car like previous Volvos ive owned and it also looks like it was like that from manufacture. Mine was one of the first MK3 cars produced, so can anyone tell me if all 2008 MK3 cars are the same as mine or has mine been altered, possibly to fit a tow bar and avoid exhaust fumes getting into a Caravan or something similar.

Yep, for some reason the 2.4D at launch had a downward facing exhaust and no bumper cut-out but the D5 had a straight chrome tip with bumper cut out.

D5 had the same downward facing exhaust.

My 2009 2.4D has a downward facing exhaust and no bumper cutout yet the engine cover states D5.

I had always thought downward facing exit was to take advantage of the scavaging effect of the slip stream over the orifice .
Once knew a clever RAF technician chap whom got unbelievable economy from his motorbikes useing the air stream to vibrate a plate for slow speed and a tee to turn the exit by 90 degrees to scavenge the exhaust at high speeds.
