V70 T5 Phase 1 ETS light and oil light problems!
Hi,
HELP!. My ETS light and oil light keep coming on at the same time! What can it be? My Electronic Throttle Module Failed last year: ETS Light on, limp home mode triggered. It had done 100 000 miles on that module so I had been waiting for it to happen. I had it fixed by BBA Reman. After refitting it and driving 30 or 40 miles the ETS light lit up even though it didn't go into Limp Home mode any more. It would keep doing it. I was going to right it off because it was costing money. My local garage said they would play with it. They had it for about 6 months working on it from time to time and trying out new ideas including having the ECU checked over and fitting a replacement secondhand Throttle module. I've got it back now and it drives lovely. BUT occasionally the ETS light and the oil pressure light come on! We can't work it out. At first I stopped immediately to check the oil. It was fine. Nor did the car go into Limp home mode. Restarting the engine made the lights go out. I cleaned the earthing point from the ETM to the engine block and the earthing strap to the body work to see if that was an issue. The problem didn't go away though. Sometimes the car goes for 100 miles and sometimes only 20 before it happens again; always both bulbs light simultaneously. And every time apart from one (when I had to wait a minute or two) they go out on restart. Not sure what to do. Has anybody had this trouble? I would be really glad of some help with this. The car has done 205 000 miles and I don't want to get rid of it. It's lovely. I did wonder about running a new wire form the oil pressure sensor but I don't really know if that would help.

Hi Terry,
Is this your 1999 V70SE T5 auto. front wheel drive? Do you have a code reader? Maybe that would show up the specific cause, rather than just "ETS". Hope that helps, Steve

Yes it is that car. I have a code reader. I'll have a look at what it says. Thanks Terry

Hi Steve,
I used the code reader. It says no trouble codes detected. Terry

Hi Terry,
Just a thought ... Assuming the the car runs fine, no bad noises, has normal grade of oil. If the oil pressure switch indicates low oil pressure, it would make sense that that wouldn't throw a code because it might be just a temporary situation. It would also make sense, after a short interval, for the control system to put the car into limp mode, to protect the engine. I don't know if it does that and if it throws a code, possibly not. If you turn the car off, then back on, I would expect the system to start monitoring oil pressure again, find that it's OK, and therefore not go into limp mode. So if the pressure switch is faulty, it might cause the oil light to go on, and may also cause temporary limp mode (possibly with ETS light) , without any code. There are two tests that you could do yourself. 1. Safe : Fit an oil pressure gauge and check that the oil pressure is actually OK at all times. (Google to get indications of what PSI to look for). 2. Easy : Disconnect the oil pressure switch and see what happens. I would be tempted to change the oil pressure switch (not expensive and easy to change I believe, although never done it myself). http://www.skandix.de/en/spare-parts...witch/1004997/ Hope that helps, Steve

Hi Steve,
That's interesting logic. It definitely doesn't go into Limp mode. When it failed last year it definitely went in to limp mode and gave a fault code of P1604 (or it may have been P1603). Changing the pressure switch does seem a good idea. I'll look into that. Thanks Terry

Hi
I've gone for the easy option at the moment and taken the wire off the oil pressure switch. I'll report back in 100 miles or when the ETS lights up! Terry

Getting more confusing!
At 195 miles the usual ETS and oil lights lit up simultaneously! Which seemed very odd to me as I still had the lead to the oil pressure sensor disconnected.
The connector itself is deeply hooded so it couldn't have touched anything to earth it out I investigated further. I discovered that there is actually no current at all in the lead to the oil pressure sensor! Very strange. I'm now wondering if that is broken elsewhere. Very unexpected.

I just used a 12v test lamp and it din't light up. I could put a meter over it.
