Replacing indicator stalk on 2007 V50?
Hello all,
Long time reader (well, a year) of this forum. I have a 2007 (56) v50. Last month the indicator stalk decided to start doing its own thing - indicating right at the slightest vibration in the road and failing to cancel after completing a right turn. Unfortunately all my automotive knowledge is based around cheap, French roundarounds (Saxo, 106, 206 etc) which I didn't mind destroying when attempting to fix them - However I'm a lot more cautious of knackering up the Volvo. I've yet to look at the steering surround to figure out how to replace the indicator stalk but I'm assuming it's a steering-wheel-off jobby? If anyone can provide a rundown of what's involved in replacing the indicator stalk and any watch-outs it would be very much appreciated. Cheers, Adam |

Okay, just an update for anyone searching. Changing the indicator was a doddle.
No idea if it's the correct procedure, but hopefully some peer review can correct it. Indicator was £43 Inc vat from Volvo Move drivers seat as far back as possible. Move steering wheel far out from the dash as possible (lever is under the steering column) Turn off car and wait for 3 mins or so (use the time to gather tools in the meantime). Disconnect battery. Using T20 torx driver, remove the three recessed self-tap screws from the lower steering column shroud. Prise the upper and lower sections of the steering column shroud apart (this took me ages as I thought I'd missed a bolt) Top shroud can now be removed once disconnected from the flexible plastic at the back. Pull the flexi plastic away from the upper shroud (i.e. Towards the doors) On the LHS of the steering wheel you should have clear access to the indicator stalk. The stalk is held in place with two Philips-headed screws. Undo the bolts (be careful not to let them fall into the lower shroud or you end up wasting 30 mins figuring out how to take the rest of the drivers side panels apart) The indicator stalk just slides out away from you steering column. Pop in the new one. Secure in place with the two Philips-headed screws. Pop the upper shroud back on and attach it to the lower shroud using the lugs closest to the steering wheel. Reattach the flexi plastic to the upper shroud Using the three self-tap screws, reattach the lower shroud to the steering column. Reconnect battery Start car and check all the functions of the indicator stalk work as expected. Cheers |

I had the same problem - bought a new part from FRF in Swansea and spent less than 10 minutes replacing the old one.
PacmanGoNomNomz's instructions are sound although I didn't disconnect the battery, and only removed two T20 torx screws. Best advice to follow is taking care not to drop the screws into the shroud! Just unscrew them enough to be able to remove completely by hand. Much, much simpler than I thought. |

Just done this.....
Couple of points, Got a new part from eBay (spare parts cheap in Latvia, cheap shipping to NZ) I needed T25 screwdriver....first one came out easily with a T20, but a T25 was a perfect fit) I used a plastic trim thingy to prise apart the shrouds. Took abut 30 mins (plus going to get a T25 screwdriver at the shops lol) Paul |
