Tyres & Wheel bearing noise solved / feedback
As I've been able to grab feedback from this forum I would like to recount my experience with the known issue of the tyres vs bearing noise.
I have Pirelli Cinturato P7 on V50 2.4i. Had a annoying hummning at 80km/h that also started to be noticeable at 40km/h too. As I read plenty of feedback on the Pirellis I tried a set of Michelin Primacy 4. The noise dissapeared at 40kmh but got awful at 60km/h. Thus the problem seemed to be tyres , as the level and when the noise arose was different from the Pirellis. So then I did some additional research and got 2 Hankook Ventus V2. Again noise started at 40km/h but at a lowe level, and from 60 to 80km/h it was say a bit better than the Pirellis. Giving the issue an additional thought I finally went for replacing both front axle wheel bearing. Noise disappeared completely , I mean any annoying sound was gone , humming or whatever. In fact the car now is too silent now, extremely quite not a single buzz. Car is a pleasure to drive now, it was already but seems a brand new, another car altogether. So if you feel the known noise at a disturbing level, don't think much go for the wheel bearings. As seen above, different tyres together with a failed bearing are giving different humming ranges, so it can be misleading. I have sold the Michelins & Hankooks and ketp the Pirelli Cinturato P7. Just wanted to give back a little feedback on this issue. Cheers! |

With V50's being the size they are, when a wheel bearing is on the way out, then can make some very strange noises.
When my drivers side bearing started to fail, the noise from it resonated right across the drive train to the other side. I thought the passenger side wheel bearing or driveshaft was also faulty/worn out. D/S bearing changed, car was back to normal with no noticeable noise coming from the passenger side.

Had the very same issue with the Pirelli p7s iv used them for years always end up humming at some point only reason I could give for this was towing long distance with caravan but maybe I was wrong and its just those annoying and expensive p7s I also replaced front wheel bearings as I was sure this was my issue.im now using intermediate brand of tyres with no issues hey presto and a few squid back in my pocket

I had a similar issue. Changed everything from tires to wheel bearings but mine turned out to be a bearing where the driveshaft goes into the gearbox
