Post New to Volvo Im impressed but have a few niggles

Hi All I just purchase a 64 plate V70 with a D4 engine and 140k miles on the clock.

Thanks to the miles it was a bargain and I am genuinely very impressed by it (I religiously but petrol but was swayed by the £20 annual tax).

As experienced owners can you assist with these niggles I have.

1 - The phone hands free is so quite I can her someone talking but not what they say, I will be listing to the stero at a normal volume. A call comes in and the call is so quite I cannot hear the person talking, I have tried turning the volume up during the call with no effect. I have also gone through the menus and can find nothing no options for call volume. Anyone else know how to make the call volume a reasonable level?

2 - Ignoring my dislike for the lack of dipstick, how do I find out the oil level? The option in on the dash is there but greyed out. I read the owners handbook which mentioned leaving the engine off for two hours (not useful when trying to service yourself) so I left the car over night came out in the morning and the dash option was still grey?!?! How do I check the level or do I just wait for the dash to turn into a Christmas tree demanding I pull over now?

Thanks for your assistance.

I prefer a dipstick too!

With regards to the volume issue, I've read on another thread that you need to increase the volume on your actual phone whilst being on the phone to someone via Bluetooth. Have a look at this thread:

Brilliant thanks,

Hands free worked better once volume was turned up, but the volume (my hearing volume) drifted up and down. When other end started talking it was quite then they got louder, only to reset on their next sentence, which is frustrating. I am using an iPhone incase that makes a difference?

Oil level is low so will need to top that up.

Try turning the volume up to full on your actual phone when you're talking to someone via Bluetooth, then lower the in car volume.

My 2014 V70 D4 told me that I needed to top up with half a litre of oil. I did this but had to wait until the following day for the message to disappear.

It kind of works and it suits people who rely upon spoon fed information.

Finding someone who sold the oil was more problematic, however. Fortunately, my local Euro Car Parts had one litre in stock. You can forget Halfords, however.

The issue for me would be if the level sensor were to fail. Who would be to blame for any consequent damage? The answer is probably the person who would check the dipstick if it existed.

I belive all engines and gearboxes for that matter should have a dipstick by law. Those that don't want to use them needn't but those that do should be given the option.

I have a heating oil tank in the garden, it's a bunded tank and the sight level has been made illegal years ago, instead we rely on a sonic gauge that is battery dependant, only as accurate as initial set up and is regarded as an indication rather than a level. So how do I determine it's time to order more oil, a bamboo cane dipped in through the filler hole. They call it progress you know.

Paul.

Thanks guys, all sound advice and I definitely agree with you green van man! The only reason to remove a dipstick I can see is to force people to go to main dealers for servicing. Surely the cost of the electronic sensor would be more than a piece of cheap metal cut and pressed to a know length.

Why did they ban sight glasses? I worked on a fuel depot and we had a sight glass on our waste tank. In fact we removed an expensive radar system as it was not correctly wired so was isolated and replaced it with a sight glass. As you say progress - in this case bringing the means of ignition to the flammable liquid.

From memory we needed a push valve on the base of the sight glass so if the sight glass was to leak/be damaged we would only loose the contents of the sight glass and not the full tank.
