Default 2011 S40 Advice needed plz

Hi Guys, just got myself a 2011 S40 D3 yesterday, and sold my old 2002 S40.
So a lot of things a different, so I have a couple of questions....

1. How do I disable the daytime running lights ?

2. Does anyone have a spare towing eye cover for the rear bumper (pref silver)

Thanks Guys

I am led to believe this can only be done by a dealership if at all

It can only be done by a software download at a dealer and it's not cheap. Expect to pay 3 figures for the privilege. You will likely struggle to find one that's willing to do so nowadays as well. It was always difficult to find willing dealers as they wouldn't turn off what Volvo see as a safety feature. It's even harder now that all cars must have DRLs even though that only applied to cars built after a certain date.

The law came in to effect in 2011 so I doubt they'd turn it off.

Another point , You would HAVE to tell your insurers as this is a built in safety device and that is part of why your premium is so reasonable ..

Yeah there is only a new one from china for £14.95 all the others are from older S40's and won't fit as mine has a curve to it.

Seriously, it is law all new cars have to have stupid looking lights on during the day ?

When I passed my test it was against the law to drive with only side lights on or fog lights if it wasn't foggy.

So now they changed it to having lights on all the time even when they are no use to help you seeing stuff in the roads ? I never knew that.

Yep it is law under European Directive 76/656/EEC, on the basis that research has shown that DRLs are likely to reduce multiple vehicle daytime accidents and fatalities by up to 6% once all vehicles are equipped. DRL are likely to result in a small increase in fuel consumption and CO² emissions of around 0.5% but this is expected to be lower when LEDs are used in place of filament light sources, as is the case with the last S40’s, V50’s etc. I used to really like the DRL’s on my V50 and the ones on my Octavia are even cooler IMO as they properly replace the sidelights.

The whole point of day running lights is to be seen by others , they catch your eye first before anything else . Since they first came out on volvo's in 1976 i have always found them invaluable when driving a volvo , you see people at a junction about to pull out in front of you , they hesitate and let you go . You can tell this by watching the front wheel , you see a small rotation movement as they just start off long before you see the body of the car move . So all running lights do is make you or them think twice which is worth it !
