Changing from MPH to KPH
I took my Volvo S80, 3,2-litre petrol, 2008 make, from the US to Europe. Is there any way I can re-configure the configuration setup to have the speedometer displaying as kilometres per hour instead of miles per hour, as it does now? Also, is there any way to reconfigure the setup to have the temperature displayed from Fahrenheit to Celsius? And last, can I re-configure the FM radio to display frequencies with the standards in Europe? Now it shows, e.g. 98,1, 98,3, 98,5, 98,7, 98,9, while in Europe it should show up 98,0, 98,2, 98,4, 98,6, 98,8. Thank you for any good bits of advice.

On my 2012 XC70 you can select one of the dashboard information displays to show a digital readout in kph but I don't know if your S80 has this facility. On my car it is accessed by the left stalk tip button. In the UK it is mandatory to have access to a kph speedo readout and this is very useful when driving on the wrong side of the channel!

Cars sold on markets with using miles usually have a simple ability to display km/h in the trip computer.
Sensus cars (from 2012) can easily change between °F and °C, but those before I don't know about. The user's manual states that to change units, you have to visit a Volvo workshop. The radio needs a different software, but I don't know if a 2008 can be updated to a different version, of if you have to replace it. A radio intended for the European market has 100 kHz channel separation (some even 50 kHz), but one destined for the US has 200 kHz separation, using odd decimals only. So in Europe it should actually show 98,0 98,1 98,2 and so on. |

Don't the earlier versions have the speed units printed onto the dashboard? The usual remedy for this is to remove the front of the dash and affix a circular sticker or new printed faceplate with the new units, eg when importing a japanese car to the UK.
Speak to someone like these guys: http://www.clusterrepairsuk.co.uk/km...del/volvo-xc70 Alternative is to find a 2nd hand dash marked with kilometers (from continental Europe) or kph plus mph (from UK). Not sure about the earlier cars but post 2013 the odometer reading shouldn't cause an issue because it is not stored in the dash. If you just want to change the central readout to display digital kilometres within the speedometer dial, if that is what you have - a dealer should be able to do it but I believe it is only a switch within VIDA, if you have access to one yourself. The later digital TFT dashboards can be changed between UK, Europe (and presumably US) spec by your dealer (different software). |

The OP has a US spec car and in the USA there is no requirement for the speedometer to measure anything other than God's own miles per hour. Apparently US citizens are not expected to take their cars over either their northern or southern borders where speed is measured in kph! I just hoiped for his sake that Volvo left the kph facility in one of the dash information displays but they may have decided to use that display for something else in the States.

Took several weeks for the local service manager to finally find out, via Sweden and Germany Tech Departments, that it can be activated/deactivated within VIDA, which we eventually did in about 10mins flat. It is possible to change the main displays from KPH to MPH, or vice versa, "quite easily" (quote from Volvo) by changing the software. Problem is that you would have to visit the dealer every time you crossed the Channel !! Everything else changes in My Car, even fuel consumption, odometer and trip metres but not the most important readout !! Last edited by 1monkey600; May 9th, 2018 at 17:55. In my manual it says that the ability to display a different unit for the speedometer is an option. Being sold in Sweden, my car doesn't have it. As it's too old to have a TFT instrument, that's it.
When I was in the UK a while ago, I used the RTI navigation system's ability to display the speed limit the way God intended, in km/h, and compared my actual speed to that. <off subject> It's the Romans who invented the mile. The meter is based on the size of the earth, and if you into such tales, you can believe that God created it. </off subject> |

And time from am/pm to 24hr as well. The speedo is physically printed with MPH, so a new speedo is required in KMPH, and then needs to be configured with VIDA. This may pose a problem, as the chassis number of your car is for a USA market where only MPH is available... so I'm not sure if possible. An extra KMPH display in the DIM info display is I think possible, at lease with the CFE extender it is certainly possible (I have one). I am not sure about the radio; it is likely programmable but may be linked to the target market configuration which is stored in the CEM. Not sure if it can be changed without altering the CEM target market programming... and that is not easy. These problems (and many more) are why I never move a vehicle between markets. It's not worth the effort and expense. I sell when I leave one market, and buy when I arrive in the new market.

What Volvo calls the carconfig is the setup in the car, which describes not only how the car is currently configured, but also all possible items that can be added to the car in the future.
Once the car has left production, it's only developers at Volvo in Gothenburg who can access and change the carconfig for any particular car. Replacing the CEM doesn't help, as the carconfig is also stored on Volvo's servers. Whether the unit for the speedometer is also inside the carconfig I don't know for sure, but it's very likely. The V70 ( MY 2009) I am interested in is in Southern Ireland where the speedo is in KPH, in order to pass an MOT you need to be able to tell the speed in MPH as well, is there a digital readout I can activate to read MPH ( will this pass the MOT?) or how easy is it to remove instrument binnacle to put mileage speeds figures on face of the speedometer?
