You mention something earlier about a swollen battery (unless I've misread), I'd be trying a new battery before most other things, especially if the current one is known to be over 4 or 5 years old...

Thanks for taking the time to read and post suggestions.
I've began having a nice relaxing Christmas and New year's so have deliberately avoided the car.
I did check the specs of the old laptop I have but it only has 4gb of ram. Not sure if this will be enough.

Hope that you all have had a wonderful Christmas and New year too

The battery is 13 months old, but it's not a silver calcium (?) one. The cover for the battery is broken so it may be that it wasn't getting sufficient cooling...
I don't have an oscilloscope so I can't properly check the charging.

So now the Vida dice is becoming more cost effective. I'll get one before I change anything else on the car.

Default Now with error codes

Seven months later...

I invested in a laptop, new battery, hard drive, win 7 pro, and a vida dice set up. Finally got around to getting it all set up and went out to the car today to see if I could use it to help in this age long quest...

The car seems to run well apart from no power steering. When I was trying to fix it at the start, I remember hearing what sounded like a relay clicking very fast multiple times before the power steering initially came on permanently. Now the power steering isn't switching on at all.

In VIDA diagnostics there is no pump speed, it is at 0 rpm.

After clearing old codes what is left are the following: -

CEM-3A00 ECM, Software Faulty signal (I believe due to ecu remap to remove dpf faults)

ECM-0380 Glow plug relay Faulty signal

ECM-0406 EGR Position sensor Signal too high (I did an EGR block a while ago - related?)

ECM-C301 Control module, faulty software check sum ECM (I believe same root cause as CEM fault above

EPS-0050 Memory error ROM Internal fault
EPS-0053 Memory error ROM Internal fault

and some PHM and ADM (Phone and additive tank codes)

I'm beginning to think that it is due to a relay failure somewhere in the front of the car but am not sure unless someone knows what the EPS codes are pointing to...

I have found the following (but it doesn't really help me)

Definition:Memory Fault In ROM.

Internal FaultDescription:The electrical power steering module (EPS) monitors the internal memory function of the control module. The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored if the electrical power steering module (EPS) registers that reading from or storing data to the internal EEPROM for the control module is not functioning correctly. The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) can be diagnosed when the ignition is switched on.

The electrical power steering module (EPS) monitors the internal memory function of the control module. The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) is stored in the electrical power steering module (EPS) if the electrical power steering module (EPS) detects that the control module EEPROM is not programmed with vehicle profile software. The diagnostic trouble code (DTC) can be diagnosed when the ignition is switched on.

I'm stuck again now, I have trouble believing that the PS pump has died. As I heard 'a relay' clicking loads when I first attempted to repair this, I'm thinking (hoping) it may be a damaged relay....

Does anyone know which relay(s) are involved in the EPS circuit and if there is a simple way of checking these relays?

I've just found (online - not checked on car yet) that the glow plug relay is at the front under the NSF headlight. This was roughly the area I heard the rapid clicking from.

Does the glow plug relay have any link to the power steering? Or is there another relay near there?

Thanks for taking the time to read and to all those who have suggested ideas

Conclusion

I changed the power steering pump, used vida dice to reset the codes, cleaned and re-connected the CEM again.

Since then the car has been running as normal with the only problem a now non-functioning air con system... should be easy enough to fix...
