This is how I programmed my key fobs, mine were different fobs and on a V90 but it was exactly the same procedure.

Woohoo! I'd put 'new' batteries in (they had sat indoors in the packet for some time) and it hadn't worked which is when I started this thread

I decided to buy more new batteries and then try reprogramming the fob before I splurged out on a new fob and IT WORKED!

New batteries plus reprogramming solved this issue!

I can now keep that money towards more important bits that I need to replace on the car!

Thank you everybody!

Edited to say it is from exactly the same spot outside my garage where I park now that I had my lovely 740 (without alarm) stolen in 2008 so I have been very worried without the little red flashing light in the windscreen to deter thieves! Now I can sleep easy!

Just FYI Ellie, there's usually a date on batteries these days, it's a "Use By" date but it doesn't mean you have to exhaust the battery by then, it literally means use it by that date. After that, without being used, the self-discharge rate becomes incredibly high and the battery goes dead fairly quickly.
However, using it before that time helps reverse the chemical reaction that causes the self-discharge. Seems like you were just unlucky with that set of batteries but lucky with another new set - glad you've got it sorted!

PS - if you would like to add a flashing LED that comes on and turns off automatically with no external activation etc, give me a shout - it's purely a deterrent but is cheap and usually effective.

I dropped down into Tescos on my way home tonight. Got out of the car, opened the estate to get out some shopping bags and then all the indicators stared blinking and I knew the immobiliser had set itself. The fob then stopped working. Indicators wouldn't stop. The reset procedure inside the car wouldn't work. The car wouldn't start, it was immobilised. Tried locking and unlocking the car with the key. Kept trying the reset procedure inside the car. Nothing would work. I went into Tescos and decided that when I came out I would have one more attempt, then I would disconnect and reconnect the battery and then I would have to call RAC who could likely do nothing except relay me home. Whilst wandering around Tescos I read this thread but the OP didn't actually tell you what eventually worked for him!:

https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=35776

I came out of Tescos, all the clicky flashing had stopped. Opened the car with the key, it all started again, she wouldn't start, she was immobilised. On my final attempt at the interior reset (before I tried disconnecting and reconnecting the battery) the reset worked and she started. Drove home, fob didn't work, locked car with key, unlocked car with key, did the reset inside the car and now all is ok again, fob working, immobiliser off, car starting

Now I am very worried this is going to happen again. I am quite happy to buy a brand new fob but I am wondering is the fob actually at fault or is the fault somewhere on the Volvoguard ii system on the car?

Grateful for any advice please

I'd check all the silly stuff Ellie, loose fuses, relays etc in the fuse box. For example, a couple of weeks back mine gave the impression of running out of petrol. I knew it wasn't as i'd filled up the previous day.

I couldn't hear the fuel pump running when it should though. Checked the fuses and the fuel pump fuse was loose.

Pushed it back in properly and away it went.

It sounds as if you're momentarily losing power to the alarm system so it's having a funny five minutes so worth a look especially for the amount of time it takes.

Thanks Dave, I'll do that.

I just found this, I'll give the orange relay a clean up:

If you look behind the trim panel on the pasenger footwell side there's an orange relay. This controls the Volvoguard system; unplug it, give its contacts a clean with switch cleaner and re-install it. This USUALLY fixes the problem, although given the age of the cars, there may be a dry solder joint inside the box.

Once re-installed, try to resynch the fob(s) as per the handbook: ignition on and off 5 times in quick succession then press either of the two buttons and check that the alarm LED flashes.
