Default 06 S40 Handbrake Question

Hi All,

i've got a handbrake issue with my S40, its typical I fix one problem and another comes up!

So basically the handbrake was always pretty tight to pull up, i parked the car went to lift it and BANG it flew up and now it travels all the way up with no effort at all. it does still seem to hold the car still though so i dont think i've snapped the cable but maybe something in the handbrake lever mechanism?

i've read people saying it can be a seized caliper, but would this cause the violent snap i heard? i need to get it apart in the cabin first and see if its something obvious..

Its in for its MOT next month, guessing this is a fail

It could be that the cable has pulled through one of the brackets under the car.You need an assistant to operate the lever while you are underneath checking cable operation before resorting to a strip down of the brakes[although this may still be advisable]FWIW my V70 recently went through the test with the handbrake lever near the top of its travel but the brakes held well enough to pass the brake roller test.'and shortly after something went bang and the handbrake lever travel became less

i would suggest that the stiff handbrake was due to the cable working its way through the cable liner and sleeve, due to age or the cable itself fraying and snagging on the liner, it went bang when it broke, it still works because its embedded in the liner.
just my thought

Managed to sort this pulled the gator up and there is a bolt to adjust the tension tightened it up and now the handbrake feels more normal. Couldn't really see what caused my issue but at least shouldn't present a problem come mot now.
