Best used estate
Hi all, after a bit of advice on which car to buy
What was considered the best most reliable estate. I dont want to be welding a rot box so looking for the newest car with the best reputation. Transmission not really important but would prefer auto. Diesel or petrol no preference. Thanks john. |

Always a tricky one to answer but for what it is worth, my opinion:
Skoda Octavia Skoda Superb Volvo V70 (can't answer for the V60 but I suspect it is sound) Mazda 6 Honda Civic Toyota Avensis You don't say how old or what your budget is so I have given a response covering mixed ages of cars.

All sound choices, 'Harvey1512', but I suspect that as 'fifthwheel' has posted in this forum that he is leaning towards a Volvo. He also states that he doesn't want to be welding a 'rotbox', which to me suggests older rather than younger, and possibly a more limited budget.
In this vein, I agree with you regarding the V70. The only welding that my own 2000 V70, which I have owned for three years, has ever required was a minimal amount on the rear exhaust hanger for it's first MOT in my ownership. Prior to that, I had a 1987 745 which I bought in 1998 and ran for 18 years. During that time, it did not require any welding, until it failed it's 2016 MOT on corroded inner wings, which would have cost c£500 to have repaired professionally. Based on that experience, if 'fifthwheel' prefers RWD, I would recommend that he looks for a late (1997/8) 945. In the event that he prefers FWD, then an early (1998/9) V70 would be my choice. I only paid £550 for mine, so depreciation can be minimal if one buys wisely. On a practical note, the 9 series estates are marginally more commodious than V70s. I trust that I have interpreted 'fifthwheel's requirements correctly, but your reply offers him more choice if perchance he is looking beyond Volvo to make his purchase. Regards, John.

John, I agree with your thinking, why post on a Volvo forum otherwise? I thought it worthwhile mentioning a few other options though. All those taxi drivers knocking around in Octavia's and Toyota's can't be wrong

Thanks all, I probably should have said I was looking for Volvo.
I am running a Merc 200 cdi estate at the moment from 2011. Mercedes are not the car they used to be so am falling out with it a bit I thought a Volvo might be more reliable if I found the right model. I didnt ask about late cars as I keep getting told "They are not proper Volvo's anymore" I would go for a late car if they were as reliable as some of the old ones. john |

Other than reliability and lack of rot, you don't mention what criteria you're considering when evaluating which is "best". Perhaps define the attributes that are important to you and then we can give more meaningful replies.
