Default Starting problems

I have recently bought a one owner 106k FSH V70 SE 2.5T which generally runs like a dream. From cold she starts on the button. However sometimes when warm, she'll turn over fine and fires some cylinders then they stop and it just turns over on the starter. She'll do this maybe 8 - 10 times then fire up like a dream again. Any ideas? It's stopping me wanting to use her for fear of being stranded....

Assuming you're confident of the basics like plugs, HT leads, distributor cap (take it off and see if the contacts are furry/corroded etc.) & rotor then the first thing that comes to mind might be the immobiliser antenna ring - cleaning the contacts often sorts it out, but you do need to do it thoroughly.

HTH

Cheers

Sorry, thought I had - she's a 1998. What's an ETM?

Electronic Throttle Module - i.e. fly-by-wire accelerator, you don't have a cable between the accelerator pedal and the throttle body, just electronics. They are notoriously unreliable on these cars, and can cause all sorts of odd problems, although when it's gone quite badly it will put up a fault light on the dash.

1998 was the cross-over year for these, so yours may or may not have one - check if it has a throttle cable going to the throttle body (it's quite obvious) if it doesn't, then it's an ETM car.

Others on here know a lot more about ETMs than I do, so I'll shut up now other than to say that irrespective of what sort of throttle the car has, a good throttle body clean won't do any harm and is fairly easy to do.

Cheers

Start with cleaning the immobiliser aerial contacts as what you describe sounds more like that than anything else, other than costing you thirty minutes of time it is a no cost fix assuming it works - Mike

Right, back from the pub now, so I'm up for the challenge! Immobiliser aerial contacts it is then. I guess I'll look up how to do that on here now and do in the morning with a clearer head (?) and better dexterity (?)
