I stayed with them for over 10 years on the basis that a dealer maintained vehicle would last well.
This is where using a main dealer can get sticky.....

You will have paid a tidy sum to have the turbo replaced, but it's not fixed the problem. Part of the service you paid for was diagnosis, they're supposed to be the experts, was it made clear to you that the turbo might not be the cause? Should you have to pay for all the parts if the original diagnosis was wrong and you still have the problem to fix having emptied your wallet once?

That said if you do get other garages to work on it, you will likely forgo any small chance of comeback you have.

This has been exactly my thinking, and I specifically asked them to diagnose the oil leak before they replaced the turbo (about 2K). They obviously did not boroscope the engine at that time, as they have just this morning come back to me and tell me that they have found oil in the cylinders.

They will find oil there because you are burning it.

I realise that you are now committed BUT the PCV is still my bet and it's a cheap shot at fixing the issue.

What oil do you use in it?

You could always try something a little bit thicker.... If the PCV replacement doesn't help.

So, while I wait for the dealer’s response, I have ordered a PCV. Where is it located exactly? Can it be accessed from the open bonnet, or do I need to get it up on a ramp?

Usually it's one cyclinder which fails if you get sudden high oil consumption - cracked piston ring etc. so if you have signs of oil in all 4, it is more likely to be PCV. I would say anyway...

I visited the dealer and now have the car back. The short version is that the after-sales manager got involved, and will get back to me with some discount options on a new car or for servicing on the V70CC.

I've now got the PCV, and having read the linked threads more closely can see that it accessible from above. It's covered in gunk and clearly hasn't been replaced for a long time, if ever.

@S60D5-185, or anyone else. Can you offer advice on replacing the PCV? There is obviously an inlet and an outlet pipe, and I'll have to move another pipe (above) and some cables out of the way, but what about oil loss?

Edit: added photo of the old, cleaned up PCV.

Hi, the PCV sits behind the oil filter housing.
If you don't mind getting a new oil filter housing gasket from the dealer, it will be far easier for you to remove this and then you will have excellent unhindered access to the PCV.
From memory only about 4 bolts on front of oil filter housing.
I changed mine without removing this housing but it was very awkward and if I was to do it again would remove filter housing.
Get a new gasket and I would say 30 minutes would see it done. 👍

The XC90 has sat on the drive for a while, but I finally was able to get a local garage to change the PCV. They gave me the old one back, and it was disappointedly clean. I took the car out for a blast down the motorway and it didn't behave well at all - It was hesitant, and I soon got the amber engine warning light. That disappeared a few days later and I was then just running short local journeys.

The next event was a 'soot filter full' message, so I tried to regenerate the DPF on an hour long motorway run, but to no avail. Eventually, I got the car back into the local garage and asked them for a software start on the DPF regen which was successful. Another run down the motorway showed that performance was definitely restored, but I got the 'low oil level' light.

I have reconciled myself to letting it go and getting a Mk2 XC90, (the old one has 265k miles), but I still have a nagging doubt that she is finished. I am now back to measuring oil consumption and still wondering what other's experience is of very high mileage D5 engine life?
