The battery failed last week when we had a few cold nights, so I put it on my battery conditioner - it seemed to have worked, but as I need the car to be 100% ready now due to my parent's poor health, I bought a new one - an Exide EA770 - 760A CCA and 77A/hr rated, so plenty powerful enough for the S70.

I decided against paying the express postage surcharge, but it still arrived 2 days later The packaging was probably illegal however - no post caps, not in a sealed bag, the box not being labelled properly (just 'Fragile') etc etc. I'm sure the courier would have a fit if they found out. It wasn't Tayna - this is the first time I haven't bought from Tayna as they were £10 dearer this time.

I've had it on charge for a few days to make sure its 100% charged, and will fit it shortly - the S70 has always cranked over a bit slowly so hopefully this 760A battery will spin it over at a brisker rate

Cleaned it then stared at it then sighed as I came to the realisation that I need to respray the front bumper because it is now the worst bit of the bodywork since I did the rear bumper.

1st December .... finally rejigged insurances on the 745 and '98 V70 CD Auto and put the V70 back on the road after 6 months lay-up whilst slowly (very slowly) fixing a few minor faults. Seems to be behaving itself!

I replaced the oil and oil filter a couple of days ago and noticed a build up of rust on the oil filter. Mann claim that it's a fault in the design of the engine, allowing water to pool on top of the filter. The thing is, Volvo would have contacted Mann at the time and asked Mann to design the filter for the engine, so whose oversight was it really? This filter had been on the car for less than 2000 miles. I'll either shorten the change interval or treat subsequent replacent filters with waxoil or similar.

Default Rust on oil filter

Very odd. I would have thought as this is dry under the bonnet and gets really warm every time one drives, it would only rust if the car is driven through deep water before being parked and left out for months in damp weather. I've never seen any rust on my oil filter.

Me neither - never seen it on any oil filter. Are you sure it was 100% genuine Mann? Thats all I can think of - that it was a faux-Mann made with substandard materials?

I guess you will be using pukka Volvo ones from now on. They can be found sensibly priced.

I've certainly never seen it on a Volvo, but have seen a few rusty filters on other makes. According to Mann it's very rare for it to happen. They also stated that the filter in question is a first fit, OEM filter made to the exact same specifications as the ones supplied to vehicle and equipmemt manufacturers. They are produced on the same production line using the same tooling, so they're no different to what you would buy from a dealer.
