V70 1999 fuel tank repair/replace

Somebody has relieved me of 3/4 of a tank of petrol by skewering the rear off side corner of my tank. A "pro" job as there was no sign of any spillage although I've not been out to the car for a couple of weeks. It might, might, respond to a temporary fix with Petro Patch Putty or similar but looks like I will need a new tank. A quick look on YouTube doesn't show a how to video even from Robert DIY. Might have missed it. I'm a bit too old and creaky to do it myself but like to know what is involved. If anyone can point me too any info on how to do the job it would be appreciated. I'll also be wanting a tank!*** Car is a 1999 V70 XT so is one of the last of the P1/P80 cars. Don't think they would have changed anything but likely the P2's have a different tank.

*** Hadn't looked on the bay when I wrote that. Found one, part numbers match, and did a BIN.

The Haynes maunual says, disconnect wiring and hoses on top of tank from sender unit and pump, remove circlip holding filler pipe to bodywork and remove pipe & seals, support tank on trolley jack, remove retaining straps and lower tank, remove vent pipes leading to front of car then finally lower tank.

Sounds easy...

Thanks. Yes that does sound easy. I have a Haynes but haven't looked at it yet. Only found this about 2 hours ago so brain is a bit frazzled at the moment. At least , I should have a replacement tank sorted.

Had the tank of my 850 out and in again just 2 weeks ago. What Haynes says is korrekt and that easy. But a service lifter and a gearbox lifter are a big help! And you have to lower the tank just a little bit, before removement, to get the two ventilationhoses, on top of the tank, off. And don't try to do the job alone! You will need 4 hands, or you'll be lost!

Thanks Gernot. Haynes says to replace the filler tube seal and the seals and plastic nuts. Sounds reasonable. Did you do that? If you did, do you have the part numbers please. I've not found them on the net so might be easier to get them from a dealer.

The gasket (part# 6842188), between tank and tube, I didn't renew. This is very solid und not likely to get leaky. But I put some plastic care on it, to keep it soft. I got a very good one from BEKO. And I renewed the clamp (3531428) between tank and tube. This part you need two times! And 2x screw (982758). There is also a sealing ring (30787028) on top of the tube. But I did't touch the upper part as there were no leaks. What do you mean by plastic nuts?

Thanks for the quick reply. I don't know what the "plastic nuts" are for. They are mentioned in the Haynes as being a good idea to replace. Anyone know what these are? Were there any other parts that you replaced? Best to have all the parts on hand at the time of replacement rather than having to wait a week to get a small part. I will be having the garage I use to do the job. They are good but I like to help them as much as possible.

Sorry, i forgot. You will, of course, also need the seals for the tank sender (9447142) and the fuelpump (9447141).

Do I assume that your 850 is an Estate/Combi? I'd found 9447179 for the pump gasket. Not looked for the sender one so thanks for reminding me.
We still need to know about these "nuts". Of course we may not need them but good to know about them.
I will probably get change the fuel filter at the same time. There seems to be 2 numbers for those and they are slightly different. 30671182 (1270529) or 30620512. The latter one is shorter/fatter and has a swaged retainer ring on the in and out tubes. I haven't looked to see what mine looks like. Being one of the last couple of years of the P80, it's the electronic throttle type V70XT seems to mean small changes. Cookeh calls it the Bastard V70 and it can certainly be a bit of one it seems.

My 850 is an estate, right. I got three P80, Modelyear 94, 96, and 99 (the bastard V70 but I'am very happy with it, it's a LPT AUTO). Anyway, the tank and all it's parts were always the same during all Modelyears. The latter fuelfilter, you mentioned, was from 2003 on, what means it will fit on the later C70s. So 30671182 is the correkt one for your volvo! The only part, that Haynes might mean with the nuts, are the rubberparts, that hold the protecting plates. Those you won't need, exept, they are broken.
