If you are sure the brakes are OK, make sure the tyres pressures are correct.

did you service the calipers? they could be a bit sticky and clean the ABS ring on the hub?
also with HG i would say pressure test, check your glowies for any water/oil on them, they should be dry!! get it changed asap if you find anything that definatly points to HG

Certainly does sound like HG failure I'm afraid, or God forbid a cracked head
No real way of knowing without taking the head off though and inspecting it, not the most joyous of jobs though on the diesel as the pump will probably have to be retimed afterwards. As for the brakes, if you're sure the calipers aren't stuck then my best guess would be some sort of ABS fault. Have you read the codes from the flash unit on the left hand suspension turret? Also, do you get any pedal vibration under light braking like the ABS is firing?? Steve

Thanks for your replys will have to bite bullet and remove head might have a go over the weekend as for the brakes iv read the fault codes and no errors are stored the only time brake pedal judders is during emergency stop situations, would it be worth removing abs fuse to see if its any different without system working or is this likely to upset system????
Another question what is the rule of thumb for tensioning cambelt i just set adjuster as it was originally when i changed cambelt last time i will replace the tensioner this time as i did not last time.... Thanks |

No harm I'm removing the fuse, the system is designed to still function as a conventional sustem in the event of ABS failure.
Can't hurt to try. A VERY BASIC rule of thumb with cambelts is a quarter of a turn by hand over it's longest run. (I emphasise the basic thing because I've been lynched for that before - "Should use a proper tension measurer... Blah blah) Steve

Scaremongerers tell you that you need special tools, never ever used a tension meter thingy, just tension it till the slack has gone. If it gums while the engine runs, its too tight.
Ps I'm sure you already know, but if you take off the head, the basket should always be changed regardless. You may want to get the set of gaskets (exhaust etc) done and clean out all the muck with darn cleaner and a wire brush (turn the wheels so the piston is at the rop of the block and stroke the brush across, don't brush inside the pots/holes you'll scratch the walls of the chamber and it will write off the block and increase chance of piston ring failure). Mark the cam alignment with tippex, both bottom and top sets as you will have separated the head and block so you want both to go back the same. Hope this helps

Where I said gum, I meant hum.
It was the same with mine, I didn't get the same symptoms though, just missing and weeping oil when I pressed it hard. If you need help I can. Ps get a carbon fibre basket, the metal layer type ones are crappy and blow easily (Ford fit them)
