Default Is there such a thing as a V40 T5 R-Design?

Hi all, I might soon be in the market for a larger car than my C30, but I do like the T5 engine, so other than the V40 XC (which does come in T5 flavour), do the non-XCs also have a T5 version?

Thanks all

You can get the 2.5 T5 (249bhp) in the pre-facelift version of the regular V40, but it's automatic only. You can get them in R-Design trim as well.... though I have never seen one on the road as they are extremely rare. At the time, they were more expensive than an Audi S3... which is probably why they are so rare.

Seen more of these T5 in Cross Country 'SE LUX' spec.

I am led to believe that this final version of the 2.5T engine had oil consumption issues as a result of Volvo updating the engine (in 2013) to reduce internal friction and produce more power. At least, this is what the American forums report based on the P3 S60 T5 (which is the 2.5T engine over there, compared to the 2.0-litre ford ecoboost engine that we got).

Somebody like Clan may be more knowledgeable on that particular issue.

Other options if you want a larger car with the same version of T5 engine as yours:

- Focus ST
- Mondeo 2.5T
- Kuga 2.5T AWD
- S80 2.5T
- V70 2.5T
- S40/V50 T5

You'll be very lucky to find a 2.5 T5 V40, hell even a 2.0 'T5' is hard to find!

Personally I'd jump from Volvo if you want a decent petrol engine, Volvo just don't do them anymore

Just buy an S40/V50 T5 and swap your mods over

Ideally I wanted manual...

Wow, that's crazy... they can't have sold many of them.

This is good (but sad) to know...! I noted the increased power and wondered what they'd done to get to 249bhp...

Hmmm. I checked the Kuga out of interest as it was previously mentioned to have the T5, but boy it must be detuned (or lardy?) as the specs I saw had the 0-60 at well over 8 seconds, too slow for me. Focus ST with the Volvo engine is just not right for me I don't think, it doesn't have the best image... S40/V50 not impossible at all, although low-ish miles, good spec, well-loved T5 R-Design ones are so thin on the ground...

This is quite sad... but it's now how I'm starting to think...

The Kuga's are 197bhp /300nm... not sure why they were detuned like that when the Mondeo was running 217bhp, but the early S80's were also running 197bhp (I guess for tax reasons?).

Obviously all of these cars are highly tune-able so I wouldnt let the 0-60 of a kuga put you off.

You can also get the 2.5T engine in the Ford S-Max (217bhp) if you really want something unique.

Or if you were feeling technical, I'm sure you could fit the M66 6 speed manual to a V40 T5....

I have a 2017 V40 T5 R-Design with the 8-speed Geartronic and the 4-cylinder VEA engine. With Polestar it delivers 400Nm torque. It has front-wheel drive only; when I bought it in France (where I live) you had to buy the CC model to get AWD with this engine and gearbox. Probably ideal, given the torque, but it pushed up the price quite a bit.

As a side note - I call first dibs on your C30 if/when it's up for sale

Haha! I love my C30... really never thought I’d be saying that when I was looking for one, but it has definitely exceeded expectations!

Will keep you posted FM

Good to know julianpms, that sounds rapid! Don’t know that engine at all but will have a look out of curiosity
