Exhaust Mods? Possible? Worthwhile? Rubbish!
Anyone know what effect removing the back box, the transverse one, from a 240GLT (non-cat) would be.
Any improvement, and how much noise? Alternatively, can you still get off the shelf straight through boxes that would substitute, and does this give any improvement?

I just installed a Jetex exhaust with both boxes being straight through. No real noise increase, no idea about performance.

Replacing the three fully baffled, silenced boxes with straight through boxeson my 760 V6 led to a slight loss of low down torque, but increased responsiveness and power at high rpms as well as a glorious noise!

I supplied Henrik with his Jetex system. We run these on our fleet of 240s for a very good reason. Slight improvement in fuel consumption (1-2mpg) and more power. We tow a lot especially long distance - it is very noticeable on hills - it has meant one gear higher on some of our regular hills. Not noticeably noisier, nicer note and importantly designed, and made in Sweden for the 240. Exhaust design does have effects on performance and the art is to produce a free flowing system that is also balanced which this system does. Home brewed are likely to increase noise levels and even reduce power. They are also built of a heavy gauge steel and have a long life.

Reason I asked about DIY exhaust mods is I'm just trying to do it on the cheap whilst I save up for a Jetex system... mostly cos the central heating boiler has just gone belly up, and I think its the ECU on that!! Anyone know anything about Potterton Prima 80F's???

You've got your priorities wrong - we've Jetex on all ours and homemade heating - a homebuilt log burner in the living room and adequate clothing elsewhere! Regards your dilema - I did have a 240 with a cherry bomb straight of the pipe exiting on rhs rear. Noisy and no improvement in power. Mike
