I'm sure it is in the forum somewhere already but I've tried and can't find it (long day)

Just looking at a 2005 V70 T5 (260bhp 2.4 engine), and just wondered what peoples honest thoughts are about that engine in terms or performance and reliability. Car has fairly low mileage, less that 90K and is a 6 speed manual.
I've had a '99 V70 T5 before which was great but had loads of niggly problems, this did about 30mpg (daily commute).

Cheers all, and apologies if this has already been covered!

performance and reliability generally good, its a strong engine, and many with the 2.5R engine, swap it for the 2.4 T5 engine

fuel economy if you got 30mpg on a 99 T5 (I struggled to average over 21 on mine brim to brim, and 6-8mpg on track) then low 30's shouldn't be a problem, although if you drive in a way to get 30 mpg from a T5, why are you buying one?

just to add, ignore mileage, history is far more important, especially see if DMF has been replaced, and I would guess at 90k/8 years its been sold due to needing belt service, DO NOT trust a selling garage sticking a sticker on the engine saying when belt replaced, as anyone can fill in a sticker, many car dealers have a supply of timing belt stickers

Never haggle for a full timing belt service as part of a deal............. you think £500 bill, they think £30 Cheap oil, wipe around filter housing, replace plugs and air filter, remove top belt cover, clean up belt, and stick a belt changed sticker in the engine bay with the date and mileage on it

I have late 07 S60 2.4 T5 Sport SE 6 speed, which has now covered 142500 miles without so much as a cough and being a vehicle tech/inspector I am extremely fussy regarding its up keep. No one touches my car but me, well except for when tyres need replacing as I don't have the equipment.

This is my third Volvo (1998 S70 T5 Manual SE and a 2002 S40 T4 Sport prior to this) and I shall be sticking with this car for some time.

I did a lot of research and knew that the latest model S60 T5 of this shape was the way to go for reliability, and was also told that the 2.4 T5 engine was the strongest of the lot. Don at Kalmar Union also informed me that the 2.4 T5 engine is basically what Volvo should have put in the R model as it can handle far more spirited driving because it is "bullet proof" in his words.

The only downside, if you can call it one is that I only average around 24.5 mpg but do you know what, I didn't buy a T5 for it's fuel consumption.

I am self employed and travel some 200 miles a day and my friends say "oh you should really buy a diesel", well my anwser to that is simple "I love petrol cars and diesel belongs in tractors!"

I mean, could you honestly see a Diesel powered Nissan GTR? Yeah right!!

You can't beat the sound of a T5 engine under full throttle, especially mine as I have fitted a stainless exhaust from Jetex which really opens it's airways
